If you are familiar with General Motors, you probably know that they have two brands that produce pickup trucks. Chevy and GMC both make a variety of pickups, and in the past, they had relatively similar offerings. But, since brands differentiate themselves, is that right for you?
Are Chevy and GMC the same?
Although both are in the General Motors portfolio, GMC are distinct brands. Starting in 2018, the difference between these manufacturers becomes apparent. GMC seems focused on being a sedan, while Chevy is positioned to deal with traditional pickup buyers.
Most GMC truck sales come from the high-end Denali model. Chevy doesn’t sell many trucks equipped with the High Country package.
Should you buy a Chevrolet or GMC?
Depending on your preference, a Chevy car or truck could be the right choice. Chevy offers trucks like the 2023 Chevy Colorado, 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500, and heavy-duty pickup trucks. Meanwhile, it owns a 2023 GMC Canyon, 2023 GMC Sierra 1500, as well as some heavy-duty trucks. Generally, these trucks share the same platform.
GM has done an admirable job with this specific demographic. If you are interested in luxury and premium features, chances are you will shop the GMC brand. But, if you’re in need of a basic work truck, you can’t go wrong with a new Chevy.
In terms of full-size trucks, the Silverado sells more units than the Sierra. But Sierra will likely command a higher price. Which reflects the type of person who wants to buy a GMC truck.
Does GM make good trucks?
General Motors is somewhat of a mixed bag, and that includes its trucks. GM isn’t known for being polished unless you opt for a higher trim. And to add to that, brands like Ford and Ram have spent a lot of time investing in the pickup truck market.
It seems like a lot of people are willing to buy Chevy and GMC trucks. Therefore, perhaps these reliability issues can be exaggerated. But if you know truck owners, you know that they are very loyal to their specific brand.
Do General Motors trucks outsell Ford?
Accordingly, GM’s full-size trucks managed to outpace Ford and Ram trucks. The Chevrolet Silverado is definitely an iconic pickup. But it might be a little surprising to learn that in the second quarter of 2022, it managed to outpace the Ford F-150.
At the same time, GM truck sales are back where they were in the past. And the Chevrolet Silverado continues to be a hotter truck than the GMC Sierra.
When it comes to how you spend your money, the best way to decide which truck is right for you is to try it out for yourself. That is if you can find new models. The auto industry is still subject to supply chain constraints, as is the rest of the world.
