What’s the Cheapest 4WD Toyota Truck You Can Buy?

The cheapest truck is the midsize Tacoma, starting at $28,580. Even with the upgrade, its MSRP is $30,825. That makes it $10,000 cheaper than the full-size Tundra 4WD ($40,865). Learn why some off-roaders still prefer the Tundra and how these trucks stack up against Toyota’s legendary four-wheel drive SUV.

The Tundra is Toyota’s full-size pickup truck and it’s been completely redesigned for the 2022 model year. The result is a twin-turbocharged V6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of the old V8/six-speed setup. It also sports plenty of off-road driver assistance programs previously only available on the Tacoma. I tried to address the problems of off-road driving in a full-size truck by introducing a front trail camera in the 4WD Tundra.

The Toyota Tacoma is the best-selling mid-size truck in the United States. The MSRP for the 2023 Toyota Tacoma is $28,580. This is for an SR truck with an I4 engine. All-wheel drive will cost you $30,825, so the upgrade costs $2,245.

An entry-level Toyota Tacoma SR can only haul at £3,500. An upgrade to the 4.0-liter, naturally aspirated V6 with four-wheel drive brings the truck’s price to $33,475. This powertrain is standard on the Tacoma TRD Pro, but this trim starts at $47,185.

The Tacoma’s V6 engine generates only 236 horsepower. Compare that to the Tundra’s 3.4-liter turbocharged V6, which makes between 348 and 437 horsepower depending on trim level. This powertrain reveals why some critics are calling the current Tacoma—which has been in operation since 2015—old.

2023 Toyota Sequoia, Tacoma, 4Runner, and Tundra (L to R). | Toyota

The Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Tundra are off-road capable pickup trucks. But it’s far from Toyota’s only four-wheel drive options. This automaker also has a wide range of SUVs (including).

The 4Runner, which shares bodywork with the Tacoma, starts at $39,555. Why does the price jump between the Tacoma and 4Runner? The least expensive SUV trim is the V6-engined SR5, which will cost quite a bit in the Tacoma. Upgrading it to 4WD will run you just $1,875 for a new total MSRP of $40,930.

Unfortunately, Toyota has discontinued US sales of the Land Cruiser SUV. This means that the only full-frame SUV based on the full-size Tundra is the Sequoia. Toyota announces MSRP for the 2023 Sequoia SR5 at $58,365. Toyota will charge $2,575 to add all-wheel drive to the Sequoia, for a total of $61,365.
