The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 stays true to its roots by being tough as nails. It’s a tough, capable truck that’s well-equipped for work and play. There is a long list of different engine options and features to meet diverse needs.

It’s primarily a carryover model, but the exterior and interior upgrades from 2022 still look and feel all-new. In addition, the 3.0-liter turbocharged Durmax V6 diesel engine has more power.

It generates 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque, which is an increase of 28 hp and 35 lb-ft of torque. The engine has a retuned turbo, new pistons, revised combustion chamber and new fuel injectors.

The mid-range Chevy Silverado 1500 LT’s cabin is the best option if you want to get a lot of bang for your buck. It adds tons of value without having to cross the $50,000 line. It spices things up for comfort and convenience with a locking rear differential, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and upgraded tech.

But there are plenty of configurations to suit different price ranges. The basic design of the WT or Work Truck gets the party started with more than just the basics. The ZR2 takes capability to the next level, riding High Country in luxurious style.

How’s the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 going?

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 delivers a blend of engagement and comfort for satisfying performance. We tested the diesel’s 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six and 6.2-liter V8 making 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Each engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

This truck has instant acceleration and can reach 60 mph in about 5.4 seconds. The diesel engine is a bit slower but has a lot more muscle. The transmission’s shifts are also precise and smooth.

While the handling and steering feel a little light, the Silverado 1500 is surprisingly agile. It doesn’t feel as big as it really is or feel woody around the curves. The brakes could be a little stronger, but they are easier to control.

Consider the Trailboss, Z71 Package, or ZR2 for off-road upgrades. A higher suspension, improved tuning, larger tires, an upgraded exhaust system, skid plates, tow hooks, and a 360-degree camera view help conquer the wilderness.

Can the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 go off-road?

Yes, there are a few different 2023 Silverado 1500 trims for off-road driving. Trailboss is a great place to start. It features a 2.0-inch lift, a two-speed transfer case, skid plates, ranchero shocks, 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, an auto-locking rear differential, and hill descent control.

It takes the ZR2 up a notch with 33-inch all-terrain tires, an auxiliary transmission cooler, off-road-specific adaptive dampers, and an electronically locking front/rear differential.

With Trailboss, off-road driving modes seemed limited. Terrain mode applies automatic braking, and off-road mode improves control in slippery conditions such as gravel, sand or mud.

Other trucks feature off-road driving modes for mud/crawls, rock crawling, sand, and snow. But the Silverado is confident in fall situations with plenty of power to climb obstacles. The ride is a bit bouncy on uneven surfaces, but larger impacts are quickly settled.

Off-road driving stats let you know how much traction each wheel has, and there’s an abundance of camera views to make it simple to navigate around obstacles.

2023 is favorable when it comes to comfort. For the most part, it delivers a smooth ride, but the impacts can send rattles through the cabin. Gravel and dirt roads can be bumpy.

There isn’t much wind or road noise at higher speeds, but you can hear the engine roar at times. It looks deep and attractive. Also, you may notice a smidge of the body trailing around sharp curves.

While roomy and supportive, the front seats are a little flat. The fabric upholstery is durable, but a bit rough. Plenty of adjustment controls are available for the driver’s seat, but you’ll have to switch to the LTZ model to control the passenger seat.

The back seat has plenty of space. Two large adults can fit in the back without any fuss. There’s plenty of head and legroom, plus the seat back is angled comfortably. There are ventilation holes in the back as well.

One feature of the Silverado is its dual-zone automatic climate control. Interacts with the surrounding environment to adjust heat or air conditioning as needed. On cool mornings, you can use the remote start system to operate the heated steering wheel and seats. The Silverado 1500 will keep drivers and passengers at optimal temperatures.

Depending on your trim level, the cabin of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ranges from drab to sublime. Things may start small, but overall great improvements have been made.

The vinyl seats are durable and stain resistant on the bottom edges, and the all-weather rubber floor mats provide excellent protection. Moving up trim levels provides access to plush leather upholstery and pops of authentic open-pore wood trim. Pops of aluminum and shiny stitching catch the eye.

The design is convenient, and everything you need is within easy reach. Shorter people may struggle to reach the edges of the bulky touchscreen, but there are physical controls and buttons on the steering wheel to provide closer access.

Our Trailboss model didn’t come with a sunroof, but the large windshield provided plenty of visibility. Thick C-pillars at the front get in the way of sharper turns, and visibility from behind is limited. However, the multiple camera views and large side mirrors make up for this difference.

Yes, the 2023 Silverado 1500 is very advanced. The 7.0-inch touchscreen is standard, but you can upgrade to the massive 13.4-inch infotainment screen powered by Google. It is fast and easy to use with vibrant graphics.

The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster looks a little basic, but it provides plenty of useful information, such as off-road driving stats, DEF and other fluid levels, driving range, and infotainment settings. The wireless phone charging pad is located near the center console and holds your phone in place.

Wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto is standard. The optional seven-speaker Bose audio system is a minor upgrade. The Super Cruise semi-automatic drive system is exceptional, but it’s only available with the High Country trim.

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 shines when it comes to interior load space. There are plenty of trays and cups to take advantage of. The center console is huge, and there is an additional compartment above the glove box.

The rear seats fold against the wall to save more space. The load floor in the back is almost completely flat, and there’s plenty of room under the rear seats. Other trucks take up space for organizational bins, but the Silverado keeps things open and free.

When properly equipped, the Silverado 1500 can tow up to 13,300 pounds and carry a payload of up to 2,300 pounds. The bed has a high riser height, but the integrated angular bumper drawer and Mulit-Flex tailgate provide easy access.

Mulit-Flex tailgate converts to a drawer, bed extender, and tool rack. It pairs with retractable handrails and can hold up to 375 lbs. Reverse trailer guidance systems and multiple sights make towing even more convenient. There’s even an in-bed cam view available to take advantage of.

How safe is the 2023 Silverado?

The 2023 Silverado 1500 is very safe. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Silverado received “Good” scores in most crash tests. This is the highest degree. But it received a few “Fair”, “Poor” and “Marginal” scores.

Seatbelt reminders get a poor ranking because the initial time is too long, and the reminder is not long enough. Child seats have gotten a fringe ranking because anchors are hard to find, very deep in the seat, and can get confused with other devices.
