You Don’t Have to Be a Mail Carrier to Drive a Mail Truck

In a world where you might think the Ford F-150 or Ram 1500 are more important. But this is not actually the case. There is one truck that has been powering America since its introduction, and that is the USPS Mail Truck. Also known as, or LLV. Mail trucks are what deliver your mail, and they’ve become quite a symbol here in the States.

If you want, you can buy a mail truck

Although it is not the most practical car for everyday use, it is possible to buy it if you want. The important thing to keep in mind is that the Grumman LLV is a purpose-built vehicle, meaning it likely won’t be comfortable.

It was first introduced in 1987, and production lasted until 1994. Initially, the truck was only supposed to be in service for 24 years. But by 2009 it became apparent that the LLV could last much longer with proper maintenance. Now, the life span of this USPS mail truck is set at 30 years.

Although the Postal Service employs multiple vehicles in its fleet. Currently, Grumman LLV is probably the most important. If you live in the United States, it’s practically impossible for you not to see one of these trucks at some point. Simply put, they are a symbol.

Who sells USPS mail trucks?

You can’t buy a new Grumman LLV, but it is possible to find them on various state auction sites. One site where you can buy a USPS mail truck is GovPlanet. Although it is worth noting that they are rather rare.

Until the United States Postal Service rolls out, LLV is still the agency’s backbone. Because of that, they are not often offered for sale. But in the future, it is quite possible that it will become even more popular.

Grumman LLV is an American icon

Grumman LLV is a mail truck built to USPS specifications. Accordingly, it is based on the 1982 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, and you can see a lot of GM components throughout this car. Initially, this delivery vehicle was equipped with an Iron Duke engine. But later, the USPS opted for the 2.2-liter LN2 engine.

It should also be noted that the instrument cluster came straight out of the S-10 Blazer, as did the front suspension. So, even though this truck was completed by Grumman, GM certainly played an important role.

When does the Postal Service get new mail trucks?

For a while now, USPS has been working on getting new delivery vehicles. Oshkosh Defense was awarded the contract, and it sure looks ridiculous. But the majority of this NGDV will be electric. This is great to see.
