Even if it’s a reliable midsize truck, here are some of the Nissan Frontier’s problems

Some common problems reported by owners include a check engine light, a stalled engine, and some general noises from the engine area. Two hundred and seventy drivers have reported a check engine light problem and erratic fuel gauge over the years, first appearing on the 1999 Frontier.

Unfortunately, this issue resulted in a Nissan recall of 2006 to 2008 trucks only. Because this erratic fuel gauge problem has been around for many more years, leaving many drivers without a fix. One solution to this problem was to replace the fuel pump, which can cost about $648 to $886.

Another common complaint in the world is abnormal noise from the engine. Some drivers report this as a whining or buzzing sound that can be coming from the timing chain area. This can be caused by excessive slack in the secondary timing chains, and RepairPal says that both the secondary timing chains and the tensioner shoes should be replaced. In addition, the engine oil and filter must also be replaced at the same time. Depending on the severity, this can cost between $462 and $607. Nissan has issued a Service Bulletin ( ) about the common problem.
