Consumer Reports Highest-Ranked Pickup Truck Is Front-Wheel Drive

It’s been a long time since an all-wheel-drive pickup truck was front and center. The most popular truck is almost always. In the past, 4×4 trucks were less common. If you look at trucks from the 1950’s to the 1980’s, 4×4 models will be rare and cost more money. The truck is the #1 truck in Consumer Reports and is only available with front-wheel drive.

Does the 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid have a four-wheel drive system?

The 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid comes with front-wheel drive only. There is currently no option for 4×4 or AWD on hybrid pickup trucks. The funny thing is that the Maverick Hybrid not only comes with 2WD, but it comes with front wheel drive. This is not common for trucks. Front-wheel drive is mostly reserved for sedans and some pickups.

Likely deterring some truck buyers, it has its benefits.

Believe it or not, 2WD pickup trucks have some advantages over their 4WD and 4WD brethren. For starters, 2WD pickup trucks are much better on gas. The lack of all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive not only makes the trucks lighter, but also reduces drag due to the lack of a front differential. We see this advantage clearly in the , which gets 37 mpg combined. Its non-hybrid, turbocharged all-wheel-drive counterpart gets just 23 mpg.

Not only are these trucks cheaper to drive, but they are also cheaper to buy. The reason you would see so many 2WD pickup trucks during the 1950s and 1970s is because the auto market was much more extensive at the time, and really basic models were more common. If you wanted a 1973 Ford F-150, for example, but didn’t need the 4×4 and needed to save some bread, you could buy a two-wheel-drive cab, single with a manual transmission. It’s hard to get the right base-level truck these days. There are still some stripped-down Chevrolet and Ford fleet trucks, but these aren’t overly common outside of professional vehicles.

How much does the 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid cost?

He says the price range for the Maverick Hybrid is $22,195 – $27,955. Given today’s market, that’s not half bad, especially when you consider the hybrid powertrain. Hybrid powertrains usually make the model more affordable. For the Mavericks, the Hybrid is the base model.

You can increase the price range if you want all-wheel drive and more power from the turbocharged Maverick. Still, CR recommends the cheaper hybrid truck higher than any other 2023 pickup. It even beats the longtime favorite. That says something.

Although many buyers might scoff at buying a two-wheel-drive pickup truck, they might consider the business, says Consumer Reports.
