Black Ghost Challenger: The Detroit Legend Is Heading to Auction

1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE “Black Ghost” Article Highlights:

  • The legendary 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE “Black Ghost” is headed to Mecom’s auction in Indianapolis in May.
  • The prolific Mopar muscle car once graced the Detroit street racing scene, cruising around historic venues like Woodward Avenue with former police officer Godfrey Qualls.
  • Qualls’ 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE inspired one of Dodge’s “Last Call,” a collection of Dodge’s Swan songs for the Charger and Challenger.

We’ve all seen the news that the brand will discontinue production of the Challenger and Charger. However, before these two modern SUVs head off into the sunset, the automaker is launching a series of models, including the Black Ghost tribute model. However, if the Last Call model isn’t enough for you, you can try and buy this original 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE “Black Ghost” while it hits the auction block in May.

Announce that the venerable street racing machine is up for grabs at the upcoming Indianapolis Auction Series May 12-23. It’s a Detroit legacy and an exciting addition to someone’s collection. On top of that, the insidious Mopar is likely to sell for a whopping sum, given its amazing story.

How much horsepower does the black ghost have?

This 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T SE Black Ghost Quall is packed with a 426 Hemi V8 engine. This engine produced about 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque.

While that power character may not sound as stratospheric as today’s supercharged, it was more than enough to smoke classic Challenger tires. Furthermore, the Black Ghost moniker is less a result of sheer speed and more of a testament to Qualls’ wicked showmanship. He would appear, race down the street, and disappear into the darkness of Detroit nights like a ghost.

What is the price of the 2023 Challenger Black Ghost?

The original 1970 Black Ghost inspired one of Dodge’s Last Call Challengers, a series of Farewell models. The 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost is a fitting tribute and starts at about $99,315.

Of course, in addition to the near six-figure price tag, the special coupe will be limited to just 300 copies. However, instead of the 426, the new Last Call model will sport a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with 807 horsepower. However, it would be great to see some of these alligator-skinned Challengers sprinting down the street to pay homage to the street racing legend of the same name.
