We Wish the 2023 Chevy Colorado Had This 1 Toyota Tacoma Feature

In 2023, there are only two new mid-sizes you can get with a manual transmission. These two trucks are the Jeep Gladiator and the Toyota Tacoma. While the Tacoma is definitely starting to show its age—its last redesign was in 2016, it can get by with the transmission. This is one of the features that would be great to see in the 2023 Chevy Colorado.

Do Trucks Still Use Manual Transmissions?

In the past, it seemed like every pickup truck offered a standard transmission. But as these vehicles moved from simple work horses to status symbols, that option was lost. At least in the US, offer the ability to arrange your own gears.

A Chevy Colorado guide can be fun

Driving a manual transmission truck is not like driving a sports car. You won’t really get short throws or experience a heel gait.

At the same time, the standard transmission provides an engaging drive. Especially if you do something like off-roading your Chevy Colorado. Standard transmissions are also seen as more robust and intuitive when compared to automatics, so it only makes sense that some truck buyers would be interested in them.

If you want proof that off-road truck buyers are interested in manual shifts, look no further than the Tacoma. As a new mid-size truck, you can still get it with a six-speed. But, this gearbox is not available for every copy of this pickup.

As it is, only the TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, and Tacoma SR are available with the manual transmission. So, in some cases, you actually need to pay a premium to get the standard six-speed transmission.

Does the new Chevy Colorado have a manual transmission?

All trucks are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Because of that, this midsize pickup truck no longer offers a standard transmission. Simply put, GM probably doesn’t see the cost of developing this gearbox as worth it.

However, according to you, the Chevy Colorado is still a solid truck. It’s newer than models like the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger, so it’s definitely more up-to-date. In fact, this midsize pickup truck actually looks better than the 2023 Tacoma on paper.

It’s unclear if the redesigned Tacoma will still offer a manual transmission. But it would be nice to know if that happened. In the United States, the vast majority of new vehicles are sold with automation. For enthusiasts like myself and perhaps our readers, the standard gearboxes provide a feeling of connection to the car. Even if it’s not something fast, like a pickup truck.
