Pickup was just slow. Nothing we need for our trucks to go up to speed. However, these days we require our vehicles to do it all. So, your pickup truck needs to be able to tow, haul, and 4×4, while still running a fast mile. Because of this all at once,. That’s why I’m happy to report that Consumer Reports’ best truck, the 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid, is also the slowest. Can I get an amen?
Consumer Reports’ top-rated pickup truck is also the slowest
The 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid is currently rated the highest of all the pickups we’ve ever tested. There is no shortage of trucks that can smash 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds. However, it is not one of them. I’m not saying that makes them good, but you could argue that spending time is only on what the truck needs to be good, not just a fat engine.

Don’t think of a maverick in today’s terms. There was a time when S10s, Rangers, and Tacomas were well-respected pickups that offered plenty of features on the cheap for those who didn’t need to tear down a house. The Maverick Hybrid is a direct connection to those trucks. Others, like the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Ranger, are small but not too small or cheap. This combo is clearly a weak point in the market because people have been buying asshole from a maverick.
We know that’s why the Maverick is so popular because otherwise, Ford’s little car isn’t all that great. CR describes the ride as “very loud” and “firm.” Interior design is nothing to write home about. Given the price, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to learn that the interior is trim and plastic.
Again, its lack of refinement proves my point that many people would rather have a lower-market pickup they can afford than a fancy cab in a $50,000 truck.
Should you buy a Ford Maverick Hybrid?
The price point alone makes the Ford Maverick a tempting choice. If you’re OK with a slow, cheap minivan, that’s the only option you have, and I’m grateful for that. We have been spoiled by modern cars for a long time, and now we are paying the price.
Don’t get me wrong, the amenities and beautiful interiors are sweet. The problem is, things aren’t cheap. The problem starts to arise when every car has these things, and regular, hard-working people can’t afford a pickup truck anymore. I’m glad the Ford Maverick’s efficiency and price rated it well in Consumer Reports. We should all want more cars and trucks like the Maverick Hybrid on the market.
