The 2023 Chevy Colorado Wants to Tackle the Toyota Tacoma

It’s very hard to beat the Toyota Tacoma, but the new Chevrolet Colorado is about to give it a try at old college. While Toyota trucks usually dominate the sales charts, Colorado fills the gap. Now the 2023 Chevy Colorado can cover even more ground.

2023 Chevy Colorado vs. 2023 Toyota Tacoma

The 2023 Chevy Colorado could give GM the edge it needs to dethrone the incredibly popular Toyota Tacoma. According to , Colorado is on the right track. It saw sales increase by 22 percent in 2022.

Coloroaod 2022 carried around 89,197 units. But it’s still a long way from the 2022 Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma has sold about 237,232 models. This gives it a sales edge of 148,035, so we’ll call Colorado the underdog for now.

However, the Tacoma has seen a six percent drop in sales through 2022 and could drop further. The Tacoma hasn’t been updated since 2016, and the 2023 Colorado is all-new.

Is the 2023 Colorado better than the Tacoma?

The 2023 Chevy Colorado needs to be tested before we can determine if it’s better than the 2023 Toyota Tacoma. However, the 2023 Colorado hopes to renew its reputation with a complete redesign, while the 2023 Tacoma stays the same.

While the Colorado got a fresh new look, it also got a little more power. The 2022 Colorado features a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque.

The new Colorado kicks off a standard 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 237 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. The higher-end version of the engine generates 310 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque.

Powered by the 2023 Tacoma, the standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. But you can upgrade to a 3.5-liter EV6 that makes 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

When properly equipped, the 2023 Colorado can tow up to 7,700 pounds, which is an increase of 700 pounds over the outgoing model. The Tacoma can tow up to 6800 lbs.

To really fight the Tacoma, the Colorado needs a superior off-road gravel. It comes in a more affordable Trail Boss trim level with 2.0 inches of suspension lift, 3.0 inches wider track, limited-slip rear differential, hill descent control, and all-terrain tires.

The Colorado ZR2’s sexiest model features a 3.0-inch lift, adaptive dampers with versatile damping, front/rear electric locking differentials, skid plates and 33-inch mud terrain tires. Also, Desert Boss has lockable beadlock wheels, a roof-mounted LED bar, and an underbody camera.

Does Colorado or Tacoma have better features?

The 2023 Chevy Colorado will likely have a smoother ride and a quieter interior than the 2023 Toyota Tacoma. But we’re still waiting for the Colorado to be tested. It features an updated interior with a more modern feel.

The 2023 Colorado has a standard 11.3-inch infotainment system, an 8.0-inch digital gauge cluster, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Tacoma features an 8.0-inch infotainment screen.

But to succeed, the Colorado must also match the Tacoma’s reliability rating and resale value. It has more power, it can be more comfortable, and it may have advantages off-road. We can’t wait to get tested.
