Only 1 Truck Is More Unreliable Than Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, Says Consumer Reports

The mechanically similar Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 is a highly capable pickup, with its powerful engines, hauling prowess, and host of useful features. But the Silverado and Sierra’s downside is lack of reliability. They made a list of the top 10 most unreliable cars. However, there is a CR that rates lower for reliability: the 2022 Jeep Gladiator.

The most unreliable pickup truck is the 2022 Jeep Gladiator, according to Consumer Reports—worse than the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra.

Its reliability ratings are based on the annual Automotive Reliability Survey. For the Automotive Reliability Survey, CR has received owner surveys of more than 300,000 vehicles, including the 2022 Jeep Gladiator, 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, and 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid.

In surveys, owners have identified various problem areas, such as engines, paint, leaks, electrical systems, and brakes. Gladiator, Silverado, Sierra, and F-150 Hybrid owners have reported a slew of issues with these problem areas. As a result, they landed on the unreliable list.

However, the Gladiator had the most problems, so Consumer Reports named it the most reliable truck around. In particular, it was plagued with issues with the suspension, drivetrain and body safety.

Based on an analysis from Consumer Reports, there aren’t many reliable pickup trucks out there. In addition to CR’s placement of the Gladiator, Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Ford F-150 Hybrid on its list of most reliable vehicles—it ranks both the midsize and full-size truck segments low for reliability.

Consumer Reports has grouped vehicles in 16 different segments. Full-size trucks rank as the most unreliable type of vehicle—dead last. and midsize trucks are at 14th. The Gladiator is a midsize pickup truck, while the Sierra and F-150 Hybrid are fullsize trucks.

However, not all trucks are unreliable. CR recommends three trucks—in part because of their respectable reliability ratings. This includes the compact 2023 Ford Maverick, the midsize 2023 Honda Ridgeline, and the full-size 2023.

If you’re putting a premium on a pickup truck, the Maverick, Ridgeline, and Ram 1500 are the preferred options. Compared to other trucks, these models are less likely to have mechanical and other problems. This translates to less hassle and lower repair costs.

However, the Gladiator, Silverado, and F-150 Hybrid raise some red flags due to their unreliability.
