If you are familiar with the auto market in 2023, you probably know that pickups are very popular. In fact, for years, vehicles like these were some of the most popular in the industry. So, it makes sense that some brands that don’t have a truck in the US are looking for ways to get one here. Mitsubishi might be one of them.
Does Mitsubishi have a truck?
Believe it or not, in the global market, you make a truck. The Mitsubishi pickup truck is known as the Triton, but it is not available in the United States. Although this Japanese automaker is not the most well-known in the US, you have to imagine that this can at least do very well.

Because of this, if a company wants to sell a truck in the United States, it doesn’t really make sense to import one. So it’s likely that a company like Mitsubishi would need to partner with someone in order to build a pickup. And this brand may be Nissan.
Nissan may help Mitsubishi build a truck
It’s not uncommon for automakers to team up with one another to cut costs and share ideas. It happens all the time, even in modern times. According to Carson Grover, director of product planning for North America, he said that Mitsubishi is interested in a pickup truck.
As it is, for a brand to do it themselves, things would get expensive quickly. Mitsubishi will have to federalize the Triton and maybe find a place to build it. Currently, this truck is made in Thailand and will be subject to chicken tax.
Grover also noted that no Mitsubishi plant in the United States has the capacity to build a new truck. If the company does team up, the result is likely to be some sort of Frontier re-brand. The Frontier is Nissan’s mid-size truck, and it was just redesigned for the 2022 model year.
Partnership can help Mitsubishi and Nissan
Although he would eventually earn a Mitsubishi badge, he could help both brands. The Frontier has gained popularity in its third generation, but it’s not quite as hot as something like the Toyota Tacoma. By working as a team, both companies’ bottom line will be improved, and that’s a good thing.
Of course, it may not be the average size. The Ford Maverick has proven to be too popular for its own good. Perhaps now is the time for a Japanese pickup truck to enter the market. For now, this is all speculation. But in my opinion, the more trucks available to consumers, the better.
