It abandoned one of its most popular short courses in nearly 30 years as it replaced its tracks, spectator accommodations and enclaves. Built by moonwalkers in 1946, North Wilkesboro Speedway is an oval five-eighths of a mile long. This was, after all, the home of moonshine production. And run moonshine. In 1948, it became one of NASCAR’s first sanctioned tracks. A dirt track started in 1947, and paved in 1957.

We’re trying to keep that energy of retrospect but also update it to the present day. We want to keep many of the old signage and the old look of the track. We want to stick to that retro feel.” .

As shown in the recent NWS photos, there are plenty of things left to upgrade or restore before any racing begins. But the first All-Star Race of 2023 won’t be until May 21, so there’s plenty of time. Want to take in the nostalgia along with the NASCAR races? You might not be so lucky, as the bleachers seats are already sold out.
