Here’s What Could Power the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek

The Crosstrek 2024 is coming and marks a new generation of this compact SUV. While visually, it doesn’t look too different from the outgoing model; there will be some changes, including a power increase. So what could be fueling the Crosstrek?

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek will debut on February 9

While other parts of the world have already gotten the new Crosstrek, we’re still shaking up the older generation here in the US. But at the Chicago Auto Show, that’s about to change. Subaru will debut for us Yanks.

it actually had its best-selling year in 2022. So, you have to think the brand would at least consider giving its small SUV more horsepower. Even if it’s just a slight push.

According to , the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has a different powertrain in Japan. It’s something Subaru calls the e-Boxer powertrain. But it seems unlikely that this hybrid powertrain will find its way to the United States.

Subaru’s small SUV could be powered by the WRX

Now, I’ll be honest; this probably won’t happen. But it sure would be nice if it did. The 2.4 liter FA24 turbo engine is the powerplant found in and Subaru WRX. If Subaru wanted to make the Crosstrek truly powerful, they could put a detuned version of this engine under the hood.

That would mean it could benefit from over 200bhp. Unfortunately, as fun as a mighty little SUV from Subaru can be, I don’t really see the folks at the company considering or endorsing that move. It could potentially lead to the cannibalization of Outback sales. And automakers tend not to want to steal sales from themselves.

For some, 2024 may have a disappointing fact. It could spell the end of this little SUV’s ability to come with a manual transmission. In Japan, that option has been dropped and it’s not like people line up to buy a new SUV with a standard drivetrain.

However, it’s not the end of the world. And if the US-spec version of the Crosstrek ends up getting more horsepower, I think the trade-off makes sense.
