Driven: The 2023 Chevy Silverado Duramax Is Very Comfortable

We spend a week with the Silverado Duramax Diesel Trail Boss, which has some pretty cool surprises. For one, it’s refined, capable, and comfortable. We use it for errands, everyday driving and off-roading. Check out what we’ve learned so far.

Is the Chevrolet Silverado Duramax Diesel worth buying?

Yes, this is an excellent configuration to consider. The 3.0-liter, six-cylinder Duramax Turbodiesel engine is smooth and rugged, packs plenty of power, and is incredibly fuel efficient.

He notes that those numbers add up to 277 h.p. and 460 lb-ft of torque. For 2023, the engine has been upgraded with new steel pistons, a retuned turbo compressor, improved fuel injectors, and improved temperature control.

It gets an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city, up to 30 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg combined. It can go over 600 miles between fill-ups, which is a relief. Also, it can tow up to 13,000 lbs.

We got about 20 mpg while running errands, but average fuel economy still adjusts. We spent more time off-road and got around 16.8 mpg on the trails.

The Toyota Tundra TRD Pro came in at around 13.8 mpg, and the GMC Sierra AT4X got around 11.6 mpg while off-road on the same tracks.

Is the Silverado 1500 Duramax a comfortable diesel?

Yes, the 2023 diesel is very comfortable. The 10-speed automatic transmission is incredibly smooth with a consistent sound. The paddle shifters provide precise control.

The engine isn’t very noisy, but it delivers an attractive low sound. It can hardly be noticed while inside the cabin. However, we have the Trail Boss model, so the off-road gear contributes to more road and wind noise.

The ride is very smooth on most surfaces. Off-road mode keeps things well controlled over rocky and gravel surfaces. Sometimes larger impacts can be felt on the road, but turbulence is quickly smoothed out.

We are fans of the dual-zone automatic climate control. It automatically adjusts to ambient temperatures, which was nice on cooler days. Also, if it gets cold enough, the heated steering wheel and seats turn on automatically with remote start.

However, the seats and steering wheel can heat up pretty quickly. This truck is a dream for those who are constantly cold during the winter season.

2023 is a very exciting choice. It’s not the fastest truck in the world, but it can go from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.5 to 7.0 seconds. That’s more than enough power to pass others on the highway and blend into traffic.

Additionally, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters can make the ride more engaging. The brakes are a little soft but provide confident stopping power. Also, the handling is responsive, but the steering is a little soft.

The Silverado isn’t the best at cornering, but the suspension is well-controlled, and there’s almost no body roll.

We still have things to learn about the Duramax Diesel, but we’ve gathered that it’s smooth, comfortable, quiet, efficient, and yet capable. Stay tuned for our full review.
