Consumer Reports Finally Found a Pickup Truck It liked More Than the Honda Ridgeline

Consumer Reports has very strict rules for what makes the cut and what doesn’t. Because of these rules, pickups rarely do well on their rating scale. However, for years, the Honda Ridgeline has influenced CR reviewers more than any other pickup truck. The Maverick Hybrid replaced Honda’s foray into pickup trucking.

The 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid is Consumer Reports’ Best Pickup Truck

True. The time has finally come. Move from a new keystroke. The 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid outsold every other pickup in Consumer Reports, big and small. The non-hybrid maverick came next. Then the 2023 Honda Ridgeline.

It makes good use of its 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine by squeezing a peppy 191 horsepower from its walls. This power is sent to the front wheels via a CVT, which “shifts” smoothly for an enjoyable driving experience.

The Maverick comes standard with this hybrid engine, but there is a 2.0-liter turbo version with 250 hp. This version still outranks the Honda Ridgeline. In fact, the CR indicates that the turbo is slightly faster than the Ridgeline. While the Ridgeline still has a smoother ride, the Maverick’s suspension holds the cabin surprisingly well, given its initial stiffness.

CR had fewer good things to say about the internal hires. In the words of the same reviewer, “Refinement was clearly not a high priority for Maverick”. That said, the cabin is pretty loud—wind noise and engine noise seep into the interior with little protection, especially on the highway. But even at low rpm, you can feel some vibration in the cabin. However, the hybrid version is said to be quieter and more comfortable. While the interior is utilitarian and practical, it is full of hard plastic. But this one comes with a very usable infotainment interface, large buttons, and simple controls.

What is the best version of the Ford Maverick?

Consumer Reports not only ranked the hybrid in first place, but also told readers that the hybrid is the obvious choice between the two. The only real downside to the hybrid car is that it only comes with front-wheel drive. This is an odd fact for a pickup truck, but the reality is that many pickup truck drivers never need all-wheel drive anyway. However, if you need AWD, the turbocharged version is your go-to cranberry.
