J.D. Power’s Most Dependable Trucks for 2023 Could Surprise You

Modern trucks aren’t just workhorses. It can also be used for commuting, off-roading, and public transportation. This is why it is so crucial when looking for a new or used truck to buy.

Each year, the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) conducted by JD Power highlights the most reliable trucks in each segment. Consumers use it to make informed decisions about which truck to buy, and automakers use it to improve their products. The 2023 edition highlighted the next 2020 model year from Toyota, Chevrolet and GMC as the most reliable.

, this is not surprising at all. In the 2023 VDS, Toyota took the most model-level accolades from all parent companies, with six, and owned the two highest-rated models with Toyota.

Toyota has consistently ranked highly in reliability surveys. It has been named the most reliable brand by Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, and was named the second most reliable. High reliability means more than other brands, resulting in higher resale value.

Accordingly, the reliability of Toyota cars is due to two main reasons. The first is Total Quality Management (TQM), which means that all cars are monitored at all stages of production to meet high quality standards. The second is the brand’s high build quality.

Chevrolet

Chevrolet also has two appearances on JD Power’s roster. The HD is the most dependable heavy-duty pickup, and the Chevrolet Colorado is the second most reliable mid-size pickup.

Chevrolet makes some very decent trucks, but its appearance in the list of most reliable trucks is surprising because the automaker is known for it. Chevrolet pickup truck owners deal with many problems over the life of the vehicle. Some of the problems include:

  • fuel sensor problems
  • Loose brake pads
  • Strong vibrations in the transmission
  • The sound of the wheels
  • Electrical issues

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD has already received seven recalls and received a low reliability rating from Consumer Reports. Many users have reported issues with the brakes, power equipment, and in-vehicle electronics.

The truck has emerged as the most reliable large pickup truck. Despite the brand’s solid reputation for its strong driving qualities, Consumer Reports rated it the bad brand due to reliability concerns. Many GMC trucks share the same reliability issues as Chevrolet trucks. Seeing it on JD Power’s list of most reliable cars is about as surprising as seeing Chevy.

JD Power uses a different set of standards

The 2023 release of JD Power VDS highlights the three most reliable truck brands in the truck segment: Toyota, Chevrolet and GMC. Toyota’s inclusion in the list is not surprising, as the brand name is synonymous with reliability. However, Chevrolet and GMC have a reputation for being less reliable and share the same reliability issues, so their appearance on the list is surprising.

However, JD Power is a global leader in consumer insights. Its rating is based on various criteria, so it remains a valuable resource to help consumers make informed decisions.
