Chevy Z71: Do You Need It on Your Silverado?

I like to advertise their abilities on their beds. It’s rare to see a truck without a TRD, HPD, 4×4, High Country, or STX badge on the bed. Trucks often proudly display the Z71 badge on the back. What is the Z71 package?

The Z71 can transform any off-road-capable truck. It comes with a bottom shield to protect the transfer case, oil pan and more. It also comes with hill descent control, off-road suspension with Rancho shocks, a two-speed transfer case, and an automatic rear differential. These add-ons can help you get over tall boulders on a trail, but also through the mud and mud you’ll find on trails.

It can cut power into the dirt better than the average Silverado truck, however, since you also get a very low gear for off-road work (or hauling the trunk). It also means you get an automatically locking rear differential, which helps with traction in the loose stuff. Of course, the Z71 also came with Z71 badging on the grille, bed, and even floor mats, on some trucks. You can’t get the Max Trailering Package, though, with the Z71.

How much is the Z71 package?

The Z71 badge means you have some extra goodies to go off-road, but not a bigger or better engine. Instead, Z71 trucks get better springs. The standard Z71 package includes Rancho front and rear shocks. It also adds a heavy-duty air filter and skid plates underneath, as well as some electronic goodies, like hill descent control. Chevy adds about $1,700 to the base price of the new Silverado, which was first introduced in the 1970s, according to Chevy.

The Z71 is available in WT, LT, RST, LTZ and High Country trims from the Silverado. The Z71 with a factory 2-inch lift is standard on Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss. However, the LT and RST sport dual-exit exhausts with polished tips and 18-inch silver wheels. The LTZ gets larger 175/60R20 tires, compared to the 265 series tires on the LT and RST. On some trims, you also get the Z71 Off-Road Protection Package, which includes a factory spray-on bed liner.

Separate packages or ZR2.

Also, since the high country already has its own badges, someone at Chevy decided that maybe the Z71 badges were overkill and not included by Chevy. Your High Country is supposed to have the upgraded suspension because it already comes with everything else. And yes, you can get it from.
