A is excellent for large families, but big cars don’t usually get the best mileage. Making the most of the cargo capacity and seating arrangement of a minivan will only add extra weight to your car. Also, although they are relatively low compared to last year, prices could rise at any time if there is enough demand.
There are currently no EV minivan options, and the only minivan with plug-in hybrid technology didn’t make the cut for Kelley Blue Book editors. Here are the minivans with the best gas mileage.
Overall’s favorite minivan for 2023, and one of the only deals you can get with all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive Sienna minivans earn about 35 combined mpg, while front-wheel drive examples get 36 combined mpg. The Toyota Sienna is also powered by a 245hp hybrid setup mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
While its ride quality isn’t exhilarating, Kelley Blue Book compliments the Toyota Sienna on its balanced handling and muffled interior noise. Editors say the Sienna XSE is slightly more engaging thanks to its sport-tuned suspension. It’s ready for light off-roading with 6.9 inches of ground clearance and roof rails.
Kelley Blue Book also highlights the Toyota Sienna 25th Anniversary Edition trim level for its unique interior accommodations and unique paint options. These limited models feature ventilated front seats, leg rests for the second row seats, and every seat is upholstered in leather. Kelley Blue Book was also a fan of the XLE trim, which features hands-free power sliding doors and an excellent safety suite.
2. Honda Odyssey
It’s available exclusively in front-wheel drive and is estimated to earn 22 mpg combined. This minivan has a 280hp V6 under the hood and a ten-speed automatic transmission. Kelley Blue Book reported no issues with the Odyssey’s highway passing power and says this minivan has a smooth ride quality.
Like most minivans, the Honda Odyssey seats seven or eight riders depending on the seating arrangement. The Odyssey has standard Magic-Slide second row seats, which can be moved to the center of the vehicle with the push of a button. With improved access to the third row, you can also take advantage of the Odyssey’s generous cargo capacity.
Even with each seat in use, the Honda Odyssey has up to 38.6 cubic feet of storage space. With the third row folded down, you have potentially over 92 cubic feet of cargo area.
Kelley Blue Book says the quality of the Honda Odyssey’s interior isn’t too refined, but every seat is roomy and comfortable. The two highest trim levels are equipped with CabinWatch, which allows you to check the audio settings of the available rear-seat infotainment system. These trims also have second row monitoring cameras and an intercom in the cabin.
3. Kia Carnival
it gets the same combined mileage as the Honda Odyssey, though its standard V6 makes 10 more horsepower. It’s mated to a smooth six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
The Carnival reportedly does a good job keeping body roll in check thanks to its refined suspension and precise steering. The Carnival SX Prestige features reclining second-row lounge seats with two-tone faux leather upholstery.
The Kia Carnival is a few thousand dollars cheaper than its rivals, with base trim priced at $32,600. Unlike some of the Carnival’s rivals, you can access some features like cabin intercom on the lower trims. It also comes with a generous standard 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
You can get a new Toyota Sienna starting at $36,135, and the Honda Odyssey starts at $37,340. Regardless of price, these SUVs are great choices when it comes to fuel efficiency and utility for families.
