3 Best New Midsize Trucks to Buy in 2023, According to Car and Driver

Midsize pickups are good alternatives to full-size models for drivers who want better maneuverability – and don’t need high towing and payload capacities. The midsize pickup truck segment is fiercely competitive, with some great options. According to Car and Driver, the top three midsize trucks to buy in 2023 are the 2023 Honda, 2023 Jeep Gladiator, and 2023 Nissan Frontier.

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline is the ultimate midsize pickup truck, says Car and Driver

According to the 2023 Honda Ridgeline is the best new mid-size pickup truck to get in 2023. Choosing the Ridgeline as the best mid-size truck is undoubtedly controversial for some pickup enthusiasts. With its monocoque body, the Ridgeline is not like traditional trucks that have a body on a frame. Therefore, some enthusiasts do not consider it a “real truck”.

— and its funky design is part of the reason. The monocoque body helps with handling better than any other mid-size truck. The Ridgeline delivers the functionality of a truck—but with the handling and comfort of a smooth-riding SUV.

Also, the Ridgeline comes with a 280-horsepower V6 engine and traction-boosting all-wheel drive. Plus, the cabin is more upscale than competitors—and offers plenty of passenger space. Plus, the pickup bed offers a great deal of practicality—with features like the in-bed box and double-action tailgate.

The 2023 Jeep Gladiator is another flagship option

The second vehicle on Car and Driver’s list of best midsize pickup trucks is the 2023 Jeep Gladiator. The Gladiator combines the off-road capabilities of an SUV with the add-on functionality of a pickup bed. It’s geared toward truck enthusiasts who enjoy some fun in the great outdoors.

Like the SUV it’s based on, the Gladiator features a removable roof and doors. However, the midsize truck relies on the Wrangler’s towing capabilities. When properly equipped, the Gladiator can tow up to 7,650 lbs. Other highlights of the Gladiator include powerful engine options, a spacious interior and an easy-to-use infotainment system.

In some ways, the 2023 Nissan Frontier, the third best midsize truck for Car and Driver, is the opposite of the 2023 Honda Ridgeline. While the Ridgeline has SUV-like comfort and handling, the Frontier brims with traditional pickup truck characteristics and charm.

As detailed by Car and Driver, “The boxy Frontier has a look inspired by the original Nissan Hardbody compact pickup from the ’80s.” The Automotive website also stated that the Frontier is “the best it’s been in a long time”. It combines the formula of an “old school” truck with the comforts and technologies of a modern truck.

Also, the Frontier has impressive off-road capabilities, especially with the PRO-4X model. Additionally, it comes standard with a 310-horsepower 3.8-liter V6.

Honorable Mention: Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline is the best new pickup truck to buy in 2023, according to Car and Driver, followed by the 2023 Jeep Gladiator and 2023 Nissan Frontier. It’s worth noting, however, that the best-selling midsize truck is only fifth in the Car and Driver rankings.

Tacoma is starting to show its age. However, it will likely get a complete redesign for 2024 – so it could jump up the rankings next year. The same goes for the Ford Ranger, fourth-place model. The next generation of the redesigned Ranger, which is already available in some international markets, will arrive in America for the 2024 model year.
