Ram just introduced its first electric truck concept: the Revolution. The company hopes to produce its first battery electric vehicle (BEV) for 2024. Will the upcoming TRX dump its Hellcat engine in favor of an electric powertrain? Most likely, the answer is yes.
Long live the Ram 1500 TRX
The Ram 1500 TRX is, as it is now, the flagship vehicle for Ram Trucks. With a Hellcat engine and long-travel suspension, this is one of the largest monster trucks around. Inspired by desert racers. This truck excels at shredding the dunes or through the desert.
That TRX will survive after 2023.
So we know the Ram 1500 TRX will survive the dawn of the automaker’s electric age. The only question is whether the TRX will be one of Ram’s electric offerings.
The Ram 1500 Revolution is an electric monster truck
Ram’s first preview of its electric future is its Ram 1500 Revolution concept truck. The automaker revealed this prototype at the Consumer Electronics Show, and it really is a monster truck.
The Ram 1500 Revolution actually shares some features with the TRX. It comes with 35-inch tires like the TRX. Not only that, but it rides on a four-way adjustable air suspension system.
Ram hasn’t revealed how much power its electric revolution will produce. But we do know that the Stellantis’ most powerful electric motor produces 442.5 horsepower. The Ram Revolution has two motors, one for each axle. So if Ram used the most powerful engines available, it could build a revolution of 885 horsepower. Those numbers dwarf even the Ram 1500 TRX’s 702 horsepower.
Not only is the top-spec Ram EV poised to be the automaker’s new TRX flagship, but it will benefit Ram in making the next electric TRX. Ram is trying to shift to as electric a brand as possible. Making its flagship EV truck might help attract some internal combustion fans.
Will Ram continue to build the internal combustion TRX?
Dodge has announced its engine by 2024. It seems unlikely that Stellantis will continue to build a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 just for the Ram 1500 TRX. Ram would have to design a new generation TRX with a less powerful petrol engine, which seems unlikely.
The Hurricane I6 will be one of the internal combustion engine candidates for the next Ram 1500 TRX. The high-output version of this twin-turbocharged Hurricane makes over 500 horsepower. The Ram 1500 TRX Hurricane will be a step down from the Hellcat TRX, but not by much.
Another option might be a hybrid version of the I6 Hurricane. A small electric motor working with the Hurricane can hit gross output close to the Hellcat TRX numbers and keep the truck alive. The TRX Hybrid also fits in well with Ram’s mission to go electric.
