The First Ford Lightning Was a Fitting Finale for the Square Body F-150

Ford Lightning, the first all-electric car, has become a household name. But it is a far cry from the first F-150 Lightning. That distinction goes to 1993-1995’s Lightning, a powerful Inhuman special edition. The Lightning was also a fitting finale to the F-150’s square body.

Was the 1993 Ford Lightning supercharged?

The first-generation Ford F-150 SVT Lightning (1993-1995) had lowered and stiffened suspension and an engine tuned for 240 horsepower. But it didn’t fit in with a supercharged Lightning until the second-generation monster truck debuted in 1999.

. According to Car and Driver, the SVT missed Chevy’s big acceleration numbers by a hair. But it did create a vehicle that was more refined and all-around performance-oriented.

Chevrolet’s approach to the 1990 muscle truck was to throw the biggest V8 engine possible into a half-ton pickup. Ford gave its square project F-150 Lightning to the team that built the Cobra, and it shows. The result is that the 1993 F-150 Lightning looks more like a sports car in every aspect, from interior design to handling.

Both trucks lost out to the 1991 GMC Cyclone. The four-wheel-drive compact pickup hit 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, defeating Ferrari’s Ferrari 348ts in the famous head-to-head showdown. But the F-150 Lightning can do something the Syclone can’t: truck stuff.

How much is a 1993 Ford Lightning worth?

The 1993-2004 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning’s popularity will certainly eclipse the 1993-1995 square body version and may be keeping its prices down. While well-preserved Lightnings are listed for $30,000-$40,000, like this last example, some sources say they sometimes sell for $10,000 or less.

What is the value of a classic square body Ford F-150 Lightning? It depends entirely on whether it’s in work truck form or classic collector vehicle form. Here’s the F-150’s first light trade-off: SVT ensured the high-performance truck retained nearly all of its original towing and payload capacity—unlike the GMC Syclone, which sacrificed power for speed.

This feature makes the 1993-1995 generation F-150 Lightning one of the coolest old monster trucks. It’s a fitting culmination of generations of square-bodied F-150s, iconic, dependable work trucks. But that also meant that some F-150 Lightnings were pushed too hard. This may be why Donut Media has added the first generation F-150 Lightning to its list of great trucks you can buy for $10K or less.
