In 2019, Mercedes-Benz completely redesigned its G-Class. The Gelandewagen (often referred to as the G Wagon) retained its rugged good looks while benefiting from a modern, wider cabin and independent front suspension. If you’re considering a 2021 Mercedes G-Class, know that you probably won’t be disappointed with this SUV. But because the limited supply has created such inflated totals for these 4WDs, you may be disappointed with their ultimate resale value.
How many horsepower does a 2021 G-Class have?
The G550 has a 4.0-liter V8 with twin turbochargers. As a result, it offers 416 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. The AMG version, the G 63, produces 577 horsepower and 627 Nm of torque.

But the subcompact G Wagon still had downsides, such as a narrow interior, poor cab layout, and difficult-to-manage steering. Mercedes-Benz addressed all these shortcomings with its 2019-present redesign. Because of this, a 2021 G Wagon is just as capable as its predecessor, but a much more enjoyable vehicle to drive every day.
How much does a fully loaded G-Wagon cost?
Mercedes advertises the MSRP of the new G-Class at $131,750. The G 63 has an MSRP of $156,450. The more expensive paints add $5,600, while the carbon-fiber finishes will set you back $3,700. By the time you check every box, you can spend well over $200,000.
Unfortunately for enthusiasts, many 2021 G-Class SUVs ended up costing more than the MSRP. The G Wagon has seen a surge in popularity and the positive reviews of the second generation have only lit this fire. Add in global supply chain issues, including shortages of microchips, and there was far more demand for the 2021 G-Class than supply. Dealers across the country pounded a premium on this hot SUV, and some customers paid double the MSRP.
What’s worse, the value of these vehicles could go down as quickly as it once went up: More than 1,600 G-Class SUVs were reportedly listed for sale on AutoTrader at one time. An anonymous dealership owner revealed that he has seen resale values drop $80,000 in just 12 months. There is no way to know if these values will continue to fall.
Know that the 2021 G-Class is an excellent vehicle by all accounts. But if you’re considering investing more in a used SUV than its original MSRP, you might be wise to wait and see where values stabilize.
