TikTok Adds New Photo Feature to Rival Instagram

TikTok is launching Photo Mode, a new photo slideshow editing tool that mimics Instagram’s features, along with some other new features, including improved editing capabilities and longer captions.

TikTok introduces photo mode

TikTok announces In a blog post it throws in the image mode, which is a carousel format designed specifically for sharing still images on the app. In addition to still images, content creators can add music to their posts.

Publishing content in Photo Mode is similar to publishing regular video content in the app.

How to use TikTok Photo Mode

To start creating content in Photo Mode, tap the “+” icon at the bottom of the For You page.

At the bottom right, click the Upload button to open your gallery. Choose the photos you want to add to the library and click Next.

As with TikTok’s video publishing features, the Edit Content page will appear. This is where you can add any music and effects.

A small icon will appear at the bottom of the screen that says “Switch to video mode”.

Competition on social media

This new feature is strikingly similar to Instagram. Instagram is known to allow creators to post circular posts of still images on their feed and stories, and TikTok appears to have emulated this.

This adds to the recent history of social media platforms mirroring each other’s features.

In the past, TikTok has inspired new features across social media platforms, including Instagram Reels, YouTube Pants, and more recently, new video features on Twitter, so it may surprise some to see TikTok taking notes from other app features.
