Consumer Reports picks least reliable SUV for 2022

We know from the list that Mercedes-Benz is the least trusted brand this year, down five points from last year’s survey. However, when it comes to SUVs and each individual brand’s model scores, one model in particular stands out, and it’s not a Mercedes-Benz. It’s the 2023 Jeep Wrangler.

The Jeep brand is next to last on the list, down one spot from last year. The Wrangler scored the lowest of the Jeep products tested for SUVs, and with it. The Cherokee scored much higher, while the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L versions score a few points above the Wrangler.

Consumer Reports gave it a pretty poor overall score, and we can see that reliability is a huge reason why. In the last 10 years of data reviewed by the publication, the model has faced body, brake and suspension issues for quite a few years.

Most concerning are major engine issues that have plagued this version for six of the 10 years CR has been collecting data on it.

While we know the Jeep Wrangler is the least reliable SUV in the survey, what have become the “runners up” so to speak? Following the Wrangler model is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE, according to . Of the two versions listed under this marque, the GLE and the E-Class, the GLE scored worse, but not by much. The E-Class is only about six points ahead.

In third place on the list is the . Confidence scores are in the medium range because the Gladiator is still relatively new. So far, this Jeep truck has had problems with the body, suspension and electrical system. It also faced problems in the drivetrain components as well as some engine and transmission issues.

In fourth place is the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500. The Consumer Reports list shows these two trucks with lower scores than the Jeep, but looking at the 2023 data, we see that the Chevy’s overall score is higher to that of the Wrangler. The GMC Sierra 1500 scores the same.

The Jeep Wrangler has been around for a while, but over the last 10 years or so, the SUV’s reliability has declined according to CR. While some areas seem to be improving, it’s still grappling with some pretty serious issues. Hopefully, the brand will string together some serious quality checks for future models to reclaim its lasting reputation.
