The highly anticipated JD Power 2023 US Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) is out and features all the most reliable cars, trucks and vehicles. The Lexus RX is one of JD Power’s most reliable SUVs for 2023

Every year, it releases its reliability study, and the most recent JD Power 2023 US Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) is finally here. The study shows that the industry average is 186 problems per 100 (PP100) vehicles, six more than last year. For 2023, this study looks at 2020 vehicles and how they continue to perform over time. The lower the score, the better the vehicle performs.

it was one of the more reliable models, scoring 111 PP100. Lexus is nothing new in JD Power’s U.S. Vehicle Reliability study, but it improved in eight out of nine categories compared to last year.

Toyota’s C-HR is another of JD Power’s most reliable SUVs

Toyota landed 168 PP100, one of the lowest marks in the mass market section. Kia scored highest with 152 PP100s, but was one of the more reliable models. The C-HR beat out the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax in the small SUV segment.

Toyota’s C-HR beat out the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax in the small SUV segment. In the premium midsize SUV segment, the Lexus RX beat the Lexus GX, but that was the entire segment. JD Power says no other premium midsize SUV scored enough to qualify.

Jonathan Banks, vice president and general manager of vehicle valuations at JD Power, says, “The used vehicle market has helped sustain dealer profitability over the past couple of years, but they need to know what vehicles to have on their lots.” Banks noted that stocking vehicles with high reliability scores helps “nurture positive brand perception and drive foot traffic.”

The 2023 US Vehicle Reliability Study examined responses from 30,062 original owners of 2020 model year vehicles after the first three years of ownership. JD Power studied these vehicles between August 2022 and November 2022. JD Power found that the majority of vehicles have improved from the 2022 study so far, showing an average improvement of 6 PP100.

JD Power’s most reliable SUVs for this year are the Lexus RX and Toyota CH-R, but 2024 isn’t set in stone. While the Lexus RX is a regular on this list, the CH-R was beaten by the Buick Encore in 2022.

It looks to stay on top for another year, but as reliability between automakers continues to improve, Toyota and Lexus have an uphill battle ahead.
