Lawsuit Alert: Chevy Silverado Transmission Problems Strike Again

Just when things seemed to be up and down for the Silverado, an old issue is back on strike. Models from 2015 to 2019 are alleged to have transmission problems that make truck driving dangerous and never receive an effective solution.

We’ve been tracking and reporting transmission issues for months, but the problem is bigger than expected. They include many GM vehicles equipped with the possibly faulty eight-speed automatic transmission.

The lawsuit alleges that erratic transmission behavior makes the vehicles unsafe to drive.

The judge granted class action status to the suit, which represents 39 plaintiffs across 26 states. Drivers of Chevrolet Silverados and other GM vehicles have reported transmission hesitation, vibration, shivers, ringing, and difficult shifts when changing gears.

The vehicle models in the suit include:

  • 2015-2019 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • 2017-2019 Chevy Colorado
  • 2015-2019 Chevy Corvette
  • 2016-2019 Chevy Camero
  • 2015-2019 Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac ESV
  • 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS, ATS-V, CTS, CT6, CTS-V
  • 2015-2019 GMC Sierra Yukon Yukon XL Yukon Denali XL
  • 2017-2019 GMC Canyon

Has Chevrolet Tried to Fix the Silverado’s Transmission Problems?

GM reportedly didn’t do enough to solve other models and vehicles. Claims indicate that GM has issued 13 different technical service bulletins related to the problem change issue alone since 2015.

So, the technicians had 13 different things to try. Some flyers have recommended changing the transmission fluid, replacing the torque converter, providing a software update, removing the transmission pan, replacing the transmission (TBV) coolant bypass valve, and more.

However, technical service bulletins from 2017 and earlier indicate that the cause of the transmission problems is unknown and that General Motors was working to find the cause and provide a solution.

Cohen-Milstein’s partner, Ted Leopold, is the court-appointed lead counsel in the case and shared that GM knowingly sold more than 800,000 cars equipped with the faulty eight-speed automatic transmission units despite being aware of the defects.

Business decision not to tell customers before making a purchase. Allegedly, dealers were instructed to tell customers that difficult shifts were normal and characteristic. Ted shared that making this decision is deeply irresponsible and symbolizes that General Motors thinks it can get away with it.

Were Silverado Transmission Problems Corrected?

Didn’t exactly receive a fix for transmission problems. But it did get a new eight-speed automatic transmission when it was redesigned for the 2019 model year. In 2023, GM began replacing the transmission control module and reprogramming the software.

There was no clear indication if this fixed the problem. Also, if you had a 2015 model with issues, waiting until 2023 for a potential fix would be too long.

There was a recall regarding a driveshaft issue in 2020 that could send vibrations through the transmission as well.

We’ll be watching this lawsuit and potential transmission repairs for the Silverado and tons of other GM vehicles.
