We have a win to celebrate because the Explorer doesn’t have to make a massive recall. Over 1.5 million models were under investigation over an alleged dangerous exhaust problem, but now owners can relax.

The Ford Explorer exhaust issue did not lead to a recall

For years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) has investigated claims of high levels of carbon monoxide filling cabins. Nearly 1.5 million Ford Explorer models from 2011 to 2017 were investigated.

the reports relate to three deaths and 657 injuries could be related.

Most of the complaints are related to Explorer Police Inceptor models used as patrol vehicles. However, rigorous test methods were used to send the exhaust gases inside the vehicle.

None of the explorers with sealed bodies in the 2017 Ford Field Service campaign had carbon monoxide levels above the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) limits.

However, some fumes did seep into the Explorer’s cabin. The NHSTA recognizes that hypersensitivities to CO and other exhaust particles exist within the general population. But the agency does not set limits or determine the accuracy of the specified safety levels.

So while older models of the Explorer may have an exhaust-related smell, it’s not dangerous. It might cause a headache, but it’s not dangerous.

What are the most common Explorer problems?

There are some more serious issues to worry about. For example, third generation Explorer models may have transmission issues.

Models from 2022 to 2005 used the 5R55 series automatic transmission, which only ran between 50,000 and 100,000 miles.

Common transmission problems for second, third and fourth generation Explorers include loss of gears, delayed shifts, shift flares or slippage, jerks, shudders, and rattling noises.

The fifth generation explorer from 2011 to 2019 faced water pump leaks. The leaks caused both engine options to fail.

A water pump leak can include overheating, excessive coolant use, heater failure, head gasket failure, and cracked cylinder heads. Oil could also mix with the coolant.

The fifth generation also had problems with power steering. Vehicles could become incredibly difficult to maneuver at random times. It would also start making rattling or rubbing noises before failing completely.

Is Explorer safe?

The current generation of Ford Explorers may be a little safer than previous models. This was because it had to meet growing safety standards and be involved in a new set of tests that didn’t exist decades ago.

But yeah, it’s a safe SUV. It is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+. It scored “Good” in most of its safety tests, which is the highest possible score. It only got two “Acceptable” ratings, which is the second highest rating.

The automatic pre-collision features earned a “Superior” rating for their ability to avoid collisions with pedestrians. He avoided wrecks at speeds of 12 and 25mph.

So if you have a Ford Explorer, don’t worry. It’s safe. 2017 and earlier models may have some exhaust fumes, but not at a harmful rate.
