The 2022 Dodge Challenger Is King of the Year, Outsells the Mustang and Camaro

The Dodge Challenger isn’t long for the part; Dodge has announced that it will discontinue production of the large coupe before 2024. While that’s bittersweet news for die-hard shopper fans, muscle car shoppers still prefer it to the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. The Dodge Challenger outperformed the Ford Mustang in 2021 and 2022. Even though it was up against the Challenger in the first quarter (Q1) of 2022, the massive Mopar won in the end. Specifically, Ford sold 47,566 horsepower last year, which fell short of the Dodge muscle coupe’s nearly 7,494 units.

At the end of the first quarter, Ford was ahead of the Dodge model by 2,862 units, but that lead didn’t continue into the end of 2022. Not only did the Mustang fail to dethrone the Challenger, but it also failed to top its 2021 record. However, this trend is not unique to 2022; The Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger have dominated this segment for years, leaving little room for competition in terms of sales. For example, in 2021, Ford sold 52,414 Mustangs, while Chevrolet only sold 21,893 Camaros. It’s not all bad, though; Camaro sales numbers for 2022 represented an increase of 12.6% compared to 2021.

However, the disparity in sales is not far from the story of the first generation cars. Ford outsold the Camaro year after year with little hope of competing with the Camaro. Moreover, it took 10 years from its release for the Camaro to outpace the Mustang.
