How do Ram trucks mislead their owners?
Some owners have found that entering their VIN a year ago and then now gives different results in the Ram Towing Capacity Tool. Said numbers have changed, sometimes down to several thousand pounds, which can be very worrying.
The team has reached out to Ram for more information, but nothing has been provided yet. Ram agreed to look into the issue.
How different can the RAM draw capacity numbers appear?
Using a 2022 Ram 2500 Limited Crew Cab 4WD with 6.7-lite Cummins, one customer has received different numbers from year to year. The first time the online tool returned information, the payload figures were 2,069 pounds, and the maximum tow was 20,049 pounds. This is problematic because the Ram 2500 has never been officially rated to tow over 20,000 and has an official rating of £19,990.
The same truck owner entered the numbers one year later and saw dramatic changes in the numbers. This time, the Ram truck’s payload was 1,980 pounds, and the listed towing capacity was 15,050 pounds. This could be a problem if that truck owner has a trailer that weighs 16,000 pounds or more.
A second issue was found with the Ram Trucks online checkout tool
Another test revealed an entirely different problem. This time the team used a Ram 1500 to determine towing capacity. The only difference was that they entered the VIN in uppercase letters and compared it using lowercase letters. Oddly enough, results for the 2019 Ram 1500 showed different towing capacity numbers.
Using uppercase letters in the VIN, the truck, with its 5.7-liter V8, is rated to carry 1,317 pounds of payload and tow up to 11,217 pounds. Using lowercase, the same truck shows a payload capacity of 1,780 pounds and a tow rating of 11,240 pounds.

Ram posts a complete towing chart with each truck configuration detailed on their website. This is the chart currently suggested by TFLtrucks owners for use. Truck towing capabilities typically do not change in the same generation, making this tow useful for all model years of the same generation.
Of course, it would also help if Ram ditched the online towing capability tool and used the same old-school process as GM. General Motors trucks have the towing and payload ratings listed on an informational sticker on each truck. This gives truck owners an easy way to find out the truck’s GVWR, GCWR, payload, tongue weight, and towing capacity.
