Only 1 New Midsize Truck Is Very Unreliable, Says Consumer Reports

When choosing which pickup to get, reliability is a deciding factor. It’s ideal to have a low-profile problem – and can run strong for many miles and years. According to Consumer Reports, there’s only one that isn’t quite as reliable: the 2022 Jeep Gladiator.

The 2022 Gladiator has the honor of being the only midsize pickup truck on Consumer Reports’ list of Most Reliable Vehicle Models. It ranked third on the list.

  • 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 / GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2022 Chevrolet Bolt
  • 2022 Ford Explorer
  • 2022 Nissan Sentra
  • 2022 Lincoln Aviator
  • 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric
  • 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid
  • Besides being the only midsize truck on the list, the Jeep Gladiator is the most reliable pickup ever. The other trucks on our list of worst for reliability are the full-size models: 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500 and 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid. However, CR ranks the Gladiator higher in terms of unreliability.

Also, in general, Jeep didn’t do well on the list. The 2023 Jeep SUV ranked first for worst reliability.

The Questionable Unreliability Ranking for the 2022 Jeep Gladiator midsize pickup truck follows the results of our Automotive Reliability Survey. Over a 12-month period, CR collected owner surveys of more than 300,000 vehicles. For the surveys, owners were asked to identify various problem areas.

The vehicles that had the most problems in the Automotive Reliability Survey earned a spot on the Most Reliable list. With more issues than any other new pickup truck, the Gladiator ranked third for unreliability. The midsize truck’s worst problems were drivetrain, suspension, and body safety issues.

Are there any reliable new pickup trucks out there?

Pickup trucks are among the most unreliable of all models – in part because of their more complex engines and drive systems. The Jeep Gladiator is at the far end of the spectrum for pickup truck unreliability.

However, not all trucks are unreliable. With favorable reliability ratings, it recommends three pickups: the 2023 Ford Maverick compact, the 2023 Honda Ridgeline midsize, and the 2023 full-size. Also, while CR doesn’t recommend the Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup, it has better-than-average reliability.

As the saying goes, “there’s always next year,” so some of the reliability issues plaguing the 2022 Jeep Gladiator midsize pickup could be solved. However, the 2023 Gladiator is a carryover model—with only minor changes.

One change for the 2023 model year is the addition of a new High Speed exterior paint color option. Also, the High Altitude trim has a new capability package, while the Willys trim now comes standard with a 7.0-inch instrument cluster, remote function for the ignition key and garage door opener, and keyless entry.

In addition, there is a new special edition of Freedom. It has unique design features, such as an American flag decal along the sides, black wheels, lift-able steel bumpers, and an Oscar Mike badge on the tailgate.
