New Chevy Small Electric Truck Could Top the Ford Maverick

Full-size pickups with fat engines have dominated the sales charts in the United States for years. However, popular compact vans such as the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz have shown that there is another way. Plus, there’s a great deal of buzz around new EV trucks, like the Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Silverado EV. Now, General Motors is combining both of those trends with its compact pickup truck. Chevy’s new electric pickup truck could top it all.

Looking back just a few years ago—if I had said that one of the most popular vehicles in the United States would be a pickup truck, most auto experts would express disbelief. This is America, Earth. While compact trucks are common in some international markets, not so much in the United States—at least until recently. In America, full-size trucks such as the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Ram 1500 reign supreme.

is also very popular.

In the wake of the success of the Maverick and Santa Cruz, other automakers are aiming to compete with their compact trucks. Both Toyota and the minivans are considering launching them in the coming years.

Now, General Motors is aiming to join the compact pickup truck party. While the automaker hasn’t officially confirmed the branding, it’s likely a Chevy truck.

If you thought the Ford Maverick was a small minivan, you might be surprised to learn that the Chevy compact van is even smaller. As detailed before, a new prototype compact electric truck has been spotted at a workshop organized by General Motors. It has a more compact layout compared to the Maverick and Santa Cruz – with only two doors instead of four. It also has a low roofline and a bed that measures 4.0 to 4.5 feet in length.

Also, for comparison’s sake, Chevy’s new electric minivan is “12 inches shorter, 11 inches narrower, and 10 inches lower” than the redesigned 2023 Chevy Colorado midsize truck. In terms of exterior dimensions, it is similar to the Chevrolet Montana for the Brazilian and Latin American markets.

Chevy’s new compact electric truck is an affordable alternative to other GM EV trucks

Automotive News also revealed that Chevy’s new compact electric car will cost less than $30,000. That makes it a more affordable alternative to GM’s other electric pickups: the Chevy Silverado EV ($39,900 MSRP) and the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup ($108,700 MSRP).

The key component of Chevy’s new electric truck that could help it outpace the Ford Maverick is performance. One of the Maverick’s weaknesses is its engines’ relatively low output, especially for its standard hybrid powertrain, which only makes 191 horsepower. The turbocharged engine produces 250 horsepower.

It is not known what type of electric powertrain will power the Chevy compact pickup truck. However, it could have a similar setup as the upcoming Chevy Equinox EV. The single-engine version of the Equinox EV makes 210 horsepower, while the two-motor AWD model produces 290 horsepower. Plus, the electric truck’s instant torque delivery will likely result in much faster acceleration than the Maverick.

Moreover, like other electric vehicles, the Chevy EV truck will undoubtedly be very efficient—even more than. GM claims the Silverado EV has fuel economy of 47 mpg, which is better than the Ford Maverick (up to 37 mpg combined).

When will it be available?

We don’t know yet when the Chevy electric pickup truck will start production. Also, it’s important to note that GM has not yet officially indicated a production version. However, given the information revealed by Automotive News and the high demand for such a truck, it is very likely that it will be a production model. Also, GM aims to have its electric vehicle division profitable by 2025, and the Chevy EV compact van could be part of those plans.
