Is the Ford Ranger More Reliable Than the Toyota Tacoma?

We have a classic battle today between the Ranger and Toyota Tacoma. Both of these midsize trucks are tough competitors, but only one is better than the other. We may have qualms about the Toyota Tacoma because it could be more reliable.

A few outlets, such as Consumer Reports, rate the Ford Ranger ahead of reliability. But Consumer Reports is protected by a paywall, so we decided to look at other sources.

the 2023 Ford Ranger has a reliability score of 86 out of 100. The 2023 Tacoma has a score of 83 out of 100. That’s just five spots behind the Ranger, and puts both trucks in the same category.

Scores between 91 to 100 are considered the best, while scores between 81 to 90 are good. These ratings are above average. The results are based on reports from real car owners and cover everything from the engine to the infotainment system.

Will the Ranger last longer than the Tacoma?

You can expect it to go 200,000-250,000 miles. With proper care and maintenance, the Ranger can exceed 300,000 miles.

If a person drives approximately 14,000 miles a year, the Ranger can provide nearly 21 years of service on the road.

Toyota Tacoma has a slightly longer lifespan. The average model can easily get between 250,000 to 300,000 miles. But with proper care and regular maintenance, it’s not uncommon for a Tacoma to reach between 300,000 to 400,000 miles.

The Tacoma can also last 20 years down the road if you drive 13,000 to 15,000 miles a year.

Ranger maintenance costs annually about $615, and the Tacoma comes in at about $478. These prices are about $650 less than the average maintenance cost for new car models.

While Tacoma may have more server issues than average, problems occur with less frequency. The severity of Ranger’s problems is moderate, and the frequency is low. Major repairs are not common.

But pickup truck use also comes into play. The Tacoma is known for being a rugged off-road vehicle that can take on even more extreme conditions. The Ranger has off-road capabilities but it’s not quite on the level of the TRD Pro.

Does the Ranger or Tacoma have better resale value?

Both Ford Rangers have good resale values. But the Tacoma has a slight edge. The Tacoma is expected to keep 60.6 percent of its value after five years, while the Ranger is expected to keep 56.7 percent of its original MSRP.

Toyota vehicles are designed with fewer moving parts, which means they may require less maintenance over time. This could make the Tacoma more affordable to take care of. The Tacoma and Ranger are about to receive a complete redesign, so the order is subject to change.

The Ranger and Tacoma aren’t stacking apples upon apples. Both trucks can last more than 300,000 miles, but the Ranger has higher reliability ratings, while the Tacoma has lower maintenance costs.

If drivers use the Tacoma and Ranger for the same purposes, the Tacoma could be the winner. Despite this, the upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor will be a real competitor to the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro.
