AdSense Pausing Monetization On Some Ukraine Related Topics

AdSense sent an email to publishers reminding them of the new policy regarding the Russian war on Ukraine which could lead to a drop in revenue. The update aims to expand on and clarify the current policy on where ads are not acceptable.

Google temporarily stops monetizing certain content

The email sent to the publishers was a reminder of a new policy regarding content related to the war on Ukraine and an expansion of the existing policy against content monetization.

Google worded the update within the email subject line as “Important note: an update on Ukraine. “

The notice stated:

“Because of the war in Ukraine, we will temporarily stop monetizing content that exploits, denigrates, or condones war.

… This pause includes, but is not limited to, claims that imply that victims are responsible for their own tragedy or similar cases of victim-blaming, such as allegations that Ukraine is committing genocide or deliberately attacking its own citizens.”

The above emailed notice extends to the recently updated official Google Publisher Policies.

The current update to the policy posted online simply states the following:

“Due to the war in Ukraine, we will temporarily stop monetizing content that exploits, denigrates, or condones war.”

AdSense policy is an agreement

Participation in the AdSense program means that the publisher agrees to abide by the policies set by the program.

Publishers who display user-generated content, such as comments or online forums, should be especially aware of this new policy.

Publishers who insist they host content that violates Google policy will need to remove Google AdSense from pages hosting the type of content that violates AdSense policy.

The policy does not specify the type of content that publishers can post.

It only informs publishers of the types of content AdSense is allowed to display.

The policy itself states:

“Google helps enable a free and open web by helping publishers monetize their content and advertisers reach potential customers with useful and relevant products and services. Maintaining trust in the advertising ecosystem requires putting limits on what we will invest.”

So if your content is not compliant with these rules for monetizable content type, publishers may want to consider removing ads from those pages because even though Google may stop ad monetization, Google may also terminate your account. AdSense in full.

The policy states:

Failure to comply with these policies may result in Google blocking ads against your content, suspending or terminating your account.
