Honda Recalls Over 114,000 Fit and HR-V Vehicles for Faulty Backup Camera Display

The Japanese automaker has issued a recall affecting two vehicles spanning five model years. Although the problems may not put most drivers in life-threatening situations, Honda’s recall is a safety concern. Failing to display the backup camera on the HR-V and HR-V crossover could endanger drivers or pedestrians.

What happened to the backup camera screen?

According to a press release, the automaker says the infotainment display’s power circuit is “improperly designed.” The company states that the problem will manifest itself in affected vehicles when the engine is started. Turning the ignition on may cause the battery to drop below the minimum factory setting. Thus, it may prevent the display system from operating, and thus fail to display images from the rear view camera.

Honda and HR-V owners can call the manufacturer’s customer service line at 1-888-234-2138. The Honda number for this recall is the 6DW. Owners can also use the NHTSA website and enter their VIN number to confirm that their vehicle is part of the blanket recall.

Owners can locate their vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) in multiple places. Most VIN plates appear on the lower left side of the dashboard, just below the windshield. All VINs, except for those manufactured before 1981, will be 17 characters long. Owners may also find their VIN number on the vehicle’s frame, under the spare tire, inside the drive-side door jamb, inside the rear wheel well, and even on the engine block. In terms of paperwork, the VIN can be found on insurance, title and registration documents.

How will you fix the affected Honda Fit and HR-Vs?

Reportedly, the remedy for the backup camera screen is a software update. NHTSA says Honda dealers will update the screen audio module software for free.

Software updates are usually one of the quickest fixes that can be done. Owners of Fit hatchbacks and crossovers can schedule an appointment with their local dealer before sending messages.
