Gas vs. Electric: Which Pickup Truck Should You Drive?

The pickup market is changing and changing rapidly. We expect to see many new electric trucks hit the market in 2023, including the new Tesla truck, which offers unique design and technology. Do you make it stick with a traditional gas-powered pickup truck or move to one?

Towing: Gas trucks are better at towing than electric trucks

Attaching a trailer to a truck is one of the best ways to get a boat or trailer to your destination. Unfortunately, most electric trucks are not able to tow the same weight as a conventional one. Although powerful enough to carry a load, pickups lose significant driving range when towing and require several hours to recharge.

Are electric trucks as powerful as gas?

Looking at how the electric Silverado EV compares to its gas-powered sibling, we find two ways to measure power. The petrol-powered Chevrolet Silverado 1500 tops out at 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The electric truck version delivers 664 horsepower and 780 pound-feet of torque at the top of the RST. Even the base Silverado EV WT offers more power than the traditional version of this pickup truck. It comes with 510 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque. For sheer power numbers, the electric truck has a lot more to it than the gas-powered one.

The Silverado EV has more power than the regular Silverado 1500. However, a gas-powered truck can tow and carry more weight. The Silverado electric car can tow 10,000 pounds and carry 1,300 pounds in the bed. This may be enough for most truck owners. However, a regular Silverado can tow 13,300 pounds and carry up to 2,280 pounds in the bed.

Ultimately, we expect electric trucks to be better at towing. These EV models are better for the environment, more efficient, have lower maintenance needs, and are more economical than their gas and diesel counterparts. Unless you need to haul a large trailer or haul heavier loads than an electric truck can handle, moving away from traditional pickup trucks makes sense for most consumers.

Of course, if you live in an area with few charging stations or need to haul heavier loads, gas powered trucks still make sense.
