Driven: The 2023 Genesis G90 Is the South Korean Maybach You Can Afford

The G90 is the car to buy when you want the highest form of luxury but can’t afford a Maybach. That means you can get a full-size luxury sedan for just about $100,000. Does that sound like a lot? Let us take you on a little tour of the G90, and you just might find it worth every penny like we did.

While it’s easy to shake your head at the $101,295 price tag we picked, the numbers start to make sense when you set eyes on the car. There are nine different exterior colors to choose from, but our tester for this week had it covered in Makalu Matte Grey. While we’re not fans of the matte paint—because it can be difficult to care for—we admit that it looked exceptional on this 17-footer.

G90 is huge. After all, it is the flagship sedan of the brand. But that length doesn’t seem flashy or outlandish when you take into account the large 21-inch alloy wheels that fill the fender flares. Split headlights and a large front grille take up enough space to give the car a serious but unique look.

The sloping, angled trunk lid gives it a subtle, sporty feel you wouldn’t expect in a car like this. Overall, we think the G90 has a sleek, non-offensive aesthetic that almost anyone can warm to over time. One of our favorite features is when you get into the car.

All four flush-mounted door handles stand out, and interior lights illuminate to welcome you to the vehicle. And when you open the electrically operated door, you enter into more luxury.

Getting inside the 2023 G90 is unlike any other

Sit inside the Genesis G90 and prepare to be mesmerized by it. On the driver’s side, when you hit the brake to start the car, the door swings shut automatically. The other three doors do the same at the touch of a button. After settling into the Nappa leather seats, you will be able to enjoy the technical benefits of the car.

There is a large 12.3-inch digital display in front of the driver as well as a 12.3-inch infotainment screen on the dash. The infotainment screen can be controlled via touch or a giant white knob on the center console. However, it should be noted that this knob can easily be confused with the gearshift knob next to it, so be careful.

There are tactile buttons below the infotainment screen for controlling the HVAC system and more buttons on the center console for heated/ventilated seat functions, camera views, and drive modes. There is even one, so the driver does not need to use the key.

In terms of entertainment and convenience features, the G90 is equipped with a Bang and Olufsen premium audio system, which sounds amazing. Each seat in the car has a massage function – apart from the rear middle seat – and a panoramic sunroof highlights both rows of seats.

Sitting in the back seat of the G90 is better than sitting in the front

Sit in the back seat of the G90, and you’ll feel like a member of the royal family. A touchscreen command center is located at the rear of the fold-out armrest that allows users to control the massage, heating/cooling, and footrest features. Yes, there is a footrest for the passenger side seat so whoever is sitting in that space can relax and tell the driver where to go.

As an added bonus, there are power window blinds on the side and rear windows to block out the sun – or any commoners trying to peak to view your majestic aura.

Genesis G90 packs a lot of power

Gone is the older V8 engine from previous Genesis G90 models. The South Korean automaker backed off in favor of a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 that was electrically supercharged. The technologically advanced engine makes 409 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque, which is more than enough power to propel the car to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, according to .

It is also mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly to all four wheels. According to the EPA, the Genesis G90 can get up to 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. In our testing, we averaged 19 mpg in combined driving situations.

Ultimately, the 2023 Genesis G90 is the affordable premium luxury sedan

At the end of the day, this is the full-size luxury sedan to buy when you want to spend your money on the highest form of luxury effectively. Although you can buy a Maybach for three times the price, what’s the point? G90 has everything you need.
