Do You Actually Need a 4×4 Truck?

There is an old question when it comes to a pickup truck, at least questions from modern times. Do you need 2WD or 4WD for your truck? The answer: it varies. Depending on your minivan needs and where you live, you may not actually need a 4×4 truck. At the same time, there are certainly times when something can be invaluable.

What does 4WD mean on a truck?

If you see it on a truck, this most likely means that the car is equipped with an all-wheel drive system. Most modern trucks offer some form of optional four-wheel drive. Although it is a system for which you have to pay an extra fee.

Four-wheel-drive pickups typically have slightly less towing capacity than their four-wheel-drive counterparts. This trade-off may be worth it if you don’t haul heavy items very often.

Do any trucks have four wheel drive?

Instead of all-wheel drive, some trucks come with all-wheel drive. These models include the Ford Maverick, Honda Ridgeline, and Hyundai Santa Cruz. Usually, as the most powerful system. But in many cases, AWD can handle things just fine.

If you look at something like the Toyota Tacoma or the Ford F-150, these trucks come with all-wheel drive. This means that a truck like this gets torque to all its wheels simultaneously. Now, some AWD systems are different than others. There are full-time systems or on-demand systems, depending on which truck you’re looking for.

4WD comes at a cost

If you’re interested in a 4WD truck, you’ll pay more than a 2WD truck. This is simply because all-wheel drive is more expensive, which is a sought-after feature. Most people choose to get a truck because they are seen as capable and utilitarian. And that’s something all-wheel drive brings to the table.

Depending on the truck you choose, the price of all-wheel drive will vary. But, even on the used market, this feature commands a premium. So, if you’re hoping to get a pickup truck, you should consider whether or not you really need something with 4×4 capability.

If you don’t, you may be able to save some money by getting a two-wheel drive truck. Even if it means making some sacrifices in terms of things like off-road capability. Additionally, you may have to make some adjustments when driving in snowy conditions.
