Rivian Wants to Make Amazon Delivery Truck Less Exclusive
You may have noticed a new Amazon delivering your packages in recent months. Amazon and Rivian are teaming up to make this look modern and work efficiently. And as it is, this delivery truck is exclusive to Amazon. With new talks in the works, that could change.
Who makes Amazon delivery trucks?
Since July last year, Amazon has been rolling out delivery trucks to ensure packages get where they need to go. These are fully electric and specifically designed to handle what Amazon needs from them.
Rescinding the clause would allow Rivian to offer this electric truck to more people.
Now, the relationship between Amazon and Rivian does not appear to be strained. A company spokesperson stated, “We continue to work together, navigating a changing economic climate, as many companies do.”
The initial deal was for 100,000 to be supplied to Amazon. Since this truck entered service, more than 10 million parcels have been delivered with it.
Amazon isn’t the only company going electric
Amazon isn’t the only player in the electrical delivery game. You may have heard that the United States Postal Service is getting new electric mail trucks. It is not widely used yet, but it will replace Grumman LLV.
USPS has also received a healthy supply of Ford electric vans to help make deliveries. This is a reflection of how electric vehicles are used in practice. It is not clear if NGDV will last as long as LLV. But it will be in service for a while.
If Rivian and Amazon can strike a deal to change the exclusivity clause, we may see more companies and government agencies wanting to order the Rivian EDV. It offers a decent range, and it’s assembled in Illinois.
Going electric means having to deal with setting up a charging infrastructure. But the White House has indicated that it will ramp it up across the United States. New car companies like Rivian will probably be excited about it.
