3 Reasons to Buy the 2023 Toyota Tundra and 3 Reasons to Not

Some critics will tell you that the 2023 Tundra is the best full-size truck you can buy for this model year. The Tundra has a gas-powered V8 engine and an A engine, with the latter generating 437 horsepower combined. The Tundra also has a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds and up to 9.4 inches of ground clearance.

For all its power, this truck does have a few niggles. Here are a few reasons why (or not) the Toyota Tundra is worth your money.

Toyota Tundra is appreciated because it offers a conventional gas engine and a drive with hybrid technology. The i-Force twin-turbo engine produces between 348 horsepower and 389 horsepower, depending on the model. The 437-horsepower hybrid powertrain is available for each model alongside the SR or standard on the Capstone and TRD Pro.

Each engine is paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission and can be selected with all-wheel drive. The hybrid Toyota Tundra setup is estimated to earn up to 22 mpg city/highway. The Tundra with a standard twin-turbo V6 and 4WD is still good on gas (by truck standards), earning 19 mpg combined.

2. Worth it for the infotainment system

The audio and multimedia system has been updated with faster response times and some useful features for 2023. An 8-inch touchscreen comes standard, and a 14-inch touchscreen is available. The 12-inch digital instrument cluster replaces the analog cluster on most BMWs.

All Toyota Tundras also include a Wi-Fi hotspot, smartphone integration, navigation, and a few USB ports. Drivers who purchase the automaker’s optional connected services also have access to the Toyota Intelligent Assistant. It’s a voice-activated program designed to learn your preferences and automatically suggest routes to navigate, adjust climate settings, and more based on the data it collects.

3. Worth it for the 2023 Toyota Tundra’s safety features

The Toyota Tundra’s standard safety suite includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, some lane-keeping software, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. The Tundra Limited adds rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitors. A 360-degree camera system is standard starting with the Platinum model.

Toyota Tundra TRO Pro gains a front camera for added peace of mind while driving off-road. Toyota keeps adventurers as safe as possible with better shocks, light bar, off-road suspension, and all-terrain tires added to this model.

4. Not worth it for the limited configuration options

The cab can be selected with either a double or crew cab, but a three-seater cab is not available. While the Tundra offers more variety in terms of cargo box sizes, you can only pair some cabs with some cabs.

For example, you can only have the shortest bunk (with less payload capacity) in the crew cabin. Higher trims are only offered with the Crew Cab, which means you’ll likely pay more for less utility.

5. Not worth it for engine variety

While some buyers appreciate the Tundra’s streamlined powertrain selection, others may crave more options. The Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500 feature six options for each engine. Both trucks also offer better fuel economy than the Tundra’s hybrid powertrain.

6. Not worth it for the 2023 Toyota Tundra towing rating

The Toyota Tundra can tow more than the Rivian RT1 and Nissan Titan, but it still isn’t the most powerful pickup truck. The Ram 1500 can tow up to an additional 750 pounds, and the Chevy Silverado 1500 can manage 13,400 pounds.

The Ford F-150 tops them all with a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds. The Toyota Tundra’s maximum payload capacity of 1,940 pounds is also not high compared to most competitors. Still, the 12,000-pound rating is more than enough to tow light, and we appreciate all of the Tundra’s other positive traits.
