The 2 Unlikely Truck Brands With IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Awards

Pick-ups are known for their capacity, size and ready-to-go. Safety hasn’t always been a priority for full-size trucks, but that’s all changing now. Some of the popular large pickup trucks have been rated, and the results are surprising. and Rivian are the only two truck brands to earn 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Awards, with two of the safest pickups.

Only two trucks met the criteria for the 2023 Top Safety Pick award: the 2023 Toyota Tundra Crew Cab and Extended Cab. The 2023 Rivian R1T passed all crash tests with flying colors, including the updated side test. One area that has been problematic for vehicles in previous years is the headlights, but the R1T received high marks for its LED projector lamps on all trim levels.

Make the list. Although Toyota is a truck brand that has won IIHS safety awards as well as IIHS awards in the past, the automaker got things right the first time with the 2023 Tundra. Extended cab and crew cab made it to the list, providing ratings High in all major crash tests.

The Extended Cab received two different headlight shades. The LED projector lamps on the Limited and Premium package and Extended Cab models get a higher score. The SR, SR5, and Limited received reflector LED headlights that received slightly lower scores.

For the crew cab, five trim levels received Adaptive Curve LED high-performance headlights. These were the Limited trims equipped with the Premium, Platinum, 1794, TRD Pro and Capstone packages. On the SR, SR5 and Limited trims, the LED reversing lights got a lower but acceptable pitch. Both versions of the 2023 Tundra achieved superior results in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian frontal collision prevention scores.

For this year, the 2023 exam strengthens the IIHS award requirements, resulting in fewer winners. Because of the changes, only 48 vehicles qualified for this year’s award. Only 28 cars, trucks, and SUVs have earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Award, and only 20 of them have earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick Award. When the changes were announced for 2022, 101 vehicles qualified, and 65 of them received the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

To date, no small pickups have qualified for a 10-option award. 14 large pickup trucks were tested for the 2023 Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick Plus awards, but only Toyota and Rivian won in the entire truck category.
