Another Ram Recall: More Fire Incidents For 340,000 With Cummins Diesel

For the second time in three months, 340,000, 2500 and 3500 trucks equipped with Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel engines are being recalled. This comes on the heels of it releasing the same issue exactly three months ago. There have been six reports of fires so far.

The problem in November was due to overpressure and overheating in the transmission. This causes fluid leakage that can lead to fires. At the time, there were 16 reports of fires starting, including one minor injury. Since 2019, there have been 10 safety recalls for Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks.

In March 2021 capacity was 20,000 trucks, 2,500 and 3,500. In October, a second recall included 130,000 trucks, with an additional 280,000 Cummins-powered trucks the following month.

Last year, there was also a recall related to the 6.7 Cummins. This one was mainly for problems with engine control units malfunctioning. ECM replacements are under warranty, as are these recent recalls.

And the 6.7 Cummins was not without its problems. When the new version of the engine debuted in the all-new Ram 1500, it switched to Bosch’s new CP4.2 twin-piston fuel pump. It has replaced the Bosch CP3 high pressure fuel pump. Cummins has used it in other Cummins applications as well, according to .

But CP4.2 only lasted two years before Cummins reverted to CP3 in 2021. However, earlier Ram trucks were stuck with the problematic CP4.2. In November 2021, to replace all Cummins engines equipped with CP4.2 with CP3.

All of this is a ram memory that pales in comparison to December’s more than 1.4 million Trucks. This involved the tailgates not closing properly from the misaligned latches. The concern was that when the tailgates were opened quickly, cargo could leak out which would cause hazards to vehicles coming upon the cargo en route. Trucks from 2019 to 2022 are part of this recall.
