NEW CARS

Has Ford Begun the Nightmare of 1984?

Is Big Brother watching us? The premise of George Orwell’s novel “1984” was that by the year 1984, we would all be under complete government surveillance. In his version, the government was called Big Brother. Although not as soon as Orwell predicted, a new patent could lead us.

What new Ford patent could lead to more corporate overreach and control?

It highlights that the most recent registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office is for vehicles that can repossess.

How can the vehicle be repossessed?

Under Ford’s new patent, it would require autonomous technology to drive itself from your driveway to the impoundment area or back to the dealership. Imagine waking up, and your car is no longer in your driveway because it has restored itself to corporate. This may be the case for many drivers in the future.

Do vehicles need to be able to self-park?

If a consumer misses several payments on the car, shouldn’t the company be able to take that car back? When a financing company, in this case Ford Motor Company, recovers a car, it usually doesn’t happen after the first lost payment. In fact, many financing companies offer ample opportunities for consumers to make payments before starting the refund process.

Adding software that allows the vehicle to drive itself into a parking lot where there are repossessed cars makes the process easier for the financing company.

Forget hiding your car. He can bring himself back to the agency

Car repossession has been an entertainment topic on television with an explosion of reality shows. However, it is not at all a positive experience for the consumer or the financing company. Some consumers try to hide or move their cars to avoid a recall, but if future vehicles can return to the finance company, that will be a thing of the past.

Should Ford proceed with this new patent?

Future technology always comes with strong opinions from both sides. On the other hand, the consumer may get lucky and try to figure out how to make payments to avoid repossession. On the other hand, most financing companies offer many opportunities for networking and extending payments. Car repossession is a lose-lose scenario for the consumer and the financing company.

The answer to whether Ford and other automakers should include technology to allow cars to re-own themselves depends on how they feel about autonomous technology and fiscal responsibility. Some will wonder where this abuse ends and consider this technology an invasion of privacy, with the consumer being the victim. Others understand that the financing company provided a loan with the understanding of regular payments, and these conditions are not met.

If self-driving cars have the potential to re-own themselves, where does Big Brother’s oversight and overreach end? Are we really on the path to making 1984 a reality?
