TESTED: Pros and Cons with the 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X

The 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X is a comfortable, refined and incredibly capable behemoth. This truck makes you feel in charge, and it’s the most capable Sierra 1500 ever. But it does come with a price.

It has a standard 6.2-liter V8 engine that makes 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. She has a lot of power to climb obstacles and overcome mud. In addition, it helps the Sierra accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

However, we could only get 14.8 mpg in the city and on the highway. While driving off-road, the average fuel economy dropped to 11.6. But it’s rated at an EPA-estimated 14 mpg in the city and up to 17 mpg on the highway. You may find yourself at the fuel pump more often than expected.

3. Con: The GMC Sierra AT4X is tall

Although rock rails and built-in steps make the 2023 Sierra AT4X easy to climb, it’s still quite steep. You may have to drop off your bags and equipment before boarding the truck. Lifting a child or dog into the back seat requires them to be elevated.

Also, with the tailgate lower, the truck bed has a higher jack height, which makes loading heavier and more difficult items. It’s hard to see the sides of the truck bed.

In addition, it is difficult to see the engine and other components once the hood is opened. You may need a stool to check the oil level, battery, coolant, and more.

4. Cons: The climate control system is slow

The AT4X features heated seats, but they are slow to heat up. Older trucks like the Toyota Tacoma heat up faster. On a very snowy morning it took the benches over 10 minutes to get warm.

But the automatic climate control system is very smart. Adjusts the temperature based on the ambient conditions outside. We rarely had to adjust fan speeds or temperature settings. Also, it doesn’t have the standard ventilated seats.

5. Con: Technology could be more accessible

The 2023 AT4X is advanced, and it can do a lot of cool things. However, the Google-powered system has a bit of a learning curve. It can be a little confusing to adjust the settings on the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system.

We recommend taking the time to push all the buttons and really learn the controls before hitting the tracks. Also, buttons are everywhere. It can be easy to press wrong. But on a positive note, everything is clearly marked. The text is a bit small, so wear your glasses!

This is our first takeaway from the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X. We still have more to learn and process. Stay tuned for our full review.
