SUVS

3 of the Best Luxury Subcompact SUVs to Buy According to MotorTrend

The segment is one of the most popular segments in the American auto industry right now. Much of that has to do with automakers ditching sedans. However, a bigger reason is simply that small SUVs compete with and beat sedans. This goes for luxury cars too, so here’s a look at three of the best on the market.

3. Lexus user experience

The 2022 Lexus UX was the third best compact luxury SUV on . He is somewhat unusual in comparison with his peers. It has a starting price of around $33,500, which narrowly outstrip most of its competitors. However, the main UX selling point is under the hood. Rather than having a powerful engine, Lexus has given the UX some economical powertrains.

It comes with a similar engine, but gets 181bhp and all-wheel drive. Its fuel economy also jumps to 41 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highways, for a combined 40 mpg.

However, there are several problems with this fuel-efficient Lexus. Though it has an upscale interior, the seats feel cramped. Its ride quality is also not great, and no matter what powertrain option it has, it will be sluggish.

2. BMW X1

The 2022 BMW X1, on the other hand, narrowly beats the UX by being a very different car. It starts at around $35,400, but despite its price, BMW hasn’t given it much in the way of luxury. Its interiors feel cheap and the interior design is “lackluster”. The good news is that BMW has updated for the 2023 model year.

Just like the Lexus, the best part of this BMW is also under the hood. The German automaker offers only one engine option for the X1, and it’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that gets 228PS and 258Nm of torque. This gives it a respectable amount of power, and when combined with its responsive handling, it’s also a fun BMW to drive.

Its fuel economy isn’t terrible either, as it gets 24 mpg city and 33 mpg highways for 29 mpg combined. Additionally, it has a maximum cargo capacity of 59 cubic feet, which is higher than average for the segment.

1. Volvo XC40

The best subcompact luxury SUV is , which won because it’s a solid SUV overall. It starts at just over $36,000, making it slightly more expensive than the BMW or Lexus. However, Volvo has given the car a great design, both inside and out. Its cabin may have higher-quality materials, but it’s still luxurious enough for most people.

Volvo gave the XC40 two turbocharged four-cylinder engines, one with 194hp and the other with 247hp. The 194hp engine gets about 28 mpg combined, while the 247hp option gets 27 mpg combined. In addition, Volvo has equipped the XC40 with many great technological features, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen display. Like most other large luxury SUVs, however, the XC40 simply has few faults while being good in every area.
