People are buying crossover SUVs in droves these days — and two big-time models are the CR-V and the Subaru Outback. While the Outback has some positive attributes, the 2023 Honda has one huge advantage over the 2023 Subaru Outback: a wonderful redesign.

While sales of the CR-V have remained strong in recent years, the crossover SUV was starting to show its age. And it was overshadowed by other models in the segment. However, the 2023 Honda CR-V took a significant leap forward with its complete redesign. It has many improvements for the new model year.

The eye-catching design continues into the CR-V’s cabin. It’s more elegant than the Outback’s interior, especially for the higher trims. The CR-V’s cabin has a premium look and feel and offers a range of premium features. It also offers increased comfort, especially with the new body-stabilizing seats, which the Outback doesn’t offer.
With new hybrid powertrain, the 2023 CR-V has much higher gas mileage than the 2023 Outback
Another update for the redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V is the new hybrid powertrain, which increases efficiency. Combining a 2.0-litre engine and two electric motors, it allows the crossover SUV to achieve an estimated fuel economy of up to 40mpg combined.
By comparison, the 2023 Outback, which doesn’t offer a hybrid model, has much lower fuel economy than the CR-V Hybrid. It has an efficiency rating of up to 29 mpg combined. Plus, even if you choose the all-gas-powered version of the CR-V, you’ll still benefit from slightly more gas mileage (up to 30 mpg combined). However, the hybrid model is significantly more efficient.
The improved fuel economy of the CR-V Hybrid translates into substantial savings at the pump over the long term. It also has the advantage of practicality. With lower fuel consumption, the CR-V Hybrid requires fewer station visits than the Outback.
Other advantages of the Honda CR-V over the Subaru Outback
There are other advantages of the 2023 over the 2023 Outback. Another element of the redesign is the increase in size. As a result, the CR-V offers more storage space, with a rear cargo capacity of 39.3 cubic feet and a total capacity of 76.5 cubic feet, compared to the 32.6 cubic feet/75.6 cubic feet of the ‘Outbacks.
Additionally, the CR-V offers a new free maintenance plan. Good for two years or 24,000 miles, it provides free coverage for factory scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, multi-point inspections and tire rotations. Conversely, it does not have a free maintenance program.
With its redesign, the 2023 Honda CR-V has a huge advantage over the 2023 Subaru Outback. While the redesign doesn’t mean the CR-V is a better vehicle overall than the Outback, it is something to consider when choosing between the two crossovers.
