The junior competition is heating up thanks to entrants like the 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz. We had a chance to drive both of these trucks last year, and admittedly, we didn’t know what to make of them at first. However, as time went on and we got the most out of each truck, we were able to see the value that both bring to those interested in a pickup truck.
2023 Ford Maverick vs. Hyundai Santa Cruz: Hyundai is a little easier
During our time with both trucks, we found the 2023 Santa Cruz to be more useful. We say that because we were able to fit more stuff in it thanks to the fold-down rear seat bottom. There is also a handy storage box inside its cargo bed. However, the truck bed was slightly smaller at 48 inches compared to the Maverick’s 54-inch bed.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing considering the Santa Cruz bed is still useful, but the extra six inches the Maverick provides makes it more practical when transporting things.
The Hyundai Santa Cruz’s cabin felt more upscale
It’s hard to believe that a Hyundai’s interior could be any nicer than a Ford’s, but in today’s market, anything is possible. Still, we preferred the soft-touch materials and upscale feel of the Santa Cruz to the Maverick. Plus, Hyundai’s infotainment system was much more engaging and offered a lot more than what Ford had. Compared to the Maverick’s infotainment system, it looked like an Atari game.
In fact, the Maverick’s infotainment menu is probably the most basic layout we’ve seen in the car thus far. For the most part, that’s not a bad thing since most buyers won’t need much, but if you’re the type who likes luxury features, the Santa Cruz is the way to go.
Ford Maverick has more to offer in the engine department
The Ford Maverick is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine that makes 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Santa Cruz is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine that generates 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. In our testing, the Ford Maverick felt much faster, thanks to the turbocharger’s help. There was plenty of mid-range torque, which kept it from accelerating on the highway, even with a heavy load, a quick and easy job.

If you’re looking to maximize your money, we suggest checking out the 2023 Ford Maverick. It’s a little more capable with its more powerful engine and longer bed. However, the 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz is also worth a look if you want more comfort, technology, and storage options.
