2023 Ford F-150 4×4 SuperCrew Cab: Can It Beat Bad Rap?

The 2023 Ford received a lot of small, but significant, improvements over the 2022 best-selling. While not addressing every issue we’d like to see improved, both the ride and handling are better. Maybe not better than a Chevrolet Silverado or a Ram 1500, but close. And while they deserve praise, they don’t address reliability.

We chose the SuperCrew 4×4 cab because it seats six and is the Big Dog in terms of reputation and overall performance for both highway and off-road. You can choose from all up to the Raptor, Raptor R, Rattler and Tremor performance trucks. To go along with the seven trims, there are six engine choices and a gazillion options.

Recommended high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine for best overall performance, mileage and torque. With 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque, it makes 55 more horsepower than the 5.0-liter V8. The all-aluminium V6 features twin-turbocharged intercooler while averaging 23 mpg for a 4×4.

Although it doesn’t have the shock-mitigation features of the Chevrolet Silverado, it’s best-in-class in terms of payload and capacity. The 4×4 with the EcoBoost V6 engine can tow 11,000 pounds with a payload of 3,325 pounds. Adding the Max Trailer Tow Package brings that number to 14,000 lbs.

Body and bed options are also numerous with Regular and SuperCrew Cabs. The Regular Cab is two-doors, the SuperCab gets four, and the SuperCrew gets longer doors and seating for six. Bed lengths include a 5.5-foot bed with 52.8 cubic feet, a 6.5-foot bed with 62.3 cubic feet, and an eight-foot bed with 77.4 cubic feet.

The cool tech options are also worth a look, though some may not be available on the lower trims. Ford’s Pro Power On Board generator is making news that keeps power running for individual homes during power outages. Truck technology also shines with Onboard Scales and Smart Hitch for weight and towing characteristics. A 12-inch screen is available on XLT models and above.

There are many, but not all of them are good. Part of it has to do with reliability and recalls. In 2022 there were for the F-150, and in 2021 there were 14. Some of them presented significant safety hazards such as separation of drive shafts, failure of steering gear and transmission.

It ranks seventh out of 17 full-size trucks. It says annual repair bills will be just under $800 on average, which is lower than the $936 average for all full-size trucks. But it found that when repairs are needed, although rarely, they are “more drastic”. Ratings are based on the cost, frequency, and severity of unscheduled repairs. Aggressive repairs are those that cost three times or more than an average repair.
