1 Midsize Pickup Costs More Than Almost Every Half-Ton Truck—and Might Still Be a Bargain

After supply chain shortages in 2022, every pickup truck manufacturer has lifted their MSRPs for 2023. And the $30,000 truck is no more. The cheapest regular cab is the Ford F-150 XL at $33,000; Some trucks start at $5,000 more.

It was once a cruise control-powered truck with crank-operated windows. But for the 2023 model year, it has cruise control and power windows as standard.

Other models, such as the Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, and Ram 1500, no longer offered the two-door “regular” short cab configuration. Longer cabs cost extra to build, so all three of these models now start at $37,000 or more.

The Jeep Gladiator might be worth every penny

You can actually get a lot of trucks with the Jeep Gladiator starting price of $38,775. All full-size pickups that advertise lower MSRPs come with entry-level engines. Sure, the Jeep Gladiator comes with the same 3.6-liter V6 engine as the entry-level Ram 1500. But Jeep designed a special cooling system for the V6 engine that gives you a towing capacity of 7,650 lbs. The entry-level Gladiator powertrain also comes with a payload capacity of 1,700 pounds.

All entry-level MSRPs for the announced entry-level half-ton pickup are for 2WD. Upgrading to will cost you more. Every Jeep Gladiator comes with all-wheel drive and solid axles ready for off-road driving.

Plus, even the half-tons that only come with four doors have smaller configurations for their entry-level trucks. Take the Ram 1500 Quad Cab, for example. That back seat is a little too small for the adults in the second row. But when the Jeep extended its Gladiator’s Wrangler chassis, it made sure some of that room went to the second passenger row. The Jeep Gladiator’s cabin may be cramped, but at least it has room for adults to sit behind adults.

Speaking of the Wrangler, the SUV starts at $30,000 and changes. If you want a second row of seats—even larger than the Wrangler Unlimited’s—and a bed, it makes sense you’d have to invest a bit more.
